montgom
1) Make sure you get a new washer for the oil drain plug, don't try to re-use the old one. If it is like my Volvo S60, it takes 26 pounds of torque to be properly crushed to prevent leaks at the oil plug.2) If your filter is a cartridge, the unit holding it is a plastic housing. I bought a nice filter housing wrench from IPDUSA.COM. Unscrew the platic housing (re-usable) and then put in a new cartridge.Hope I did not mislead you!BobHi all,Not to sound like a complete tool, but I told my girlfriend that I would change her oil in her 00 S40 and I picked up the oil and filter and when I took a look at the filter it looks like some kind of insert and not the 'typical' idea I have in my head with regards to what an oil filter is.My background in changing oil (I ALWAYS change my own) has been limited to a 1988 Iroc-Z, a 1996 Z28, and a 1998 Grand Prix GTP (I have also changed many other domestics but those 3 are the cars I have done a million times) and they all have had external type oil filters that you 100% remove and replace. Doesn't seem like this is the case here.I just want to make sure that this is what I am supposed to have for an oil filter for her car. In addition, is this your standard oil change (relative to my world). I am used to this:1) Get under car2) Pop off oil filter3) Pop off drain plug4) Let oil drain5) Replace drain plug/oil filter6) Fill with oilJust seems like this may be a little different than I am used to..........Any tips/guides/help out there for a GM guy trying to do his GF Volvo owner a favor?Oh yeah, I have this nifty oil filter removal 'cup thingy' for my Grand Prix. Is there the same type of thing for a Volvo out there?Thanks,BrianPS-I am condidering a Volvo (S60R) as my next ride...........←

I suppose if I should replace it I will. Where do I get one/what is it (size wise)? Can I just get it at a hardware store?I ordered the filter wrench and will be doing the change tomorrow, thanks for all your help guys!Brian

You need to get it from a autoparts store or the dealer. FCP groton should be able to get it. They should be replaced at every oil change, but who does that...
the underlørd
It's a copper crush washer. You need to get it from a autoparts store or the dealer. FCP groton should be able to get it. It leaked. Bought 10 from dealership. I change washer every oil change, and never have a leak. You just can't win with used washers. I read here in VS that using a copper washer would eventually damage the threads, and should not be used.
sleeperZ96BT
So if I were to get one from a parts store is there a specific p/n, size, etc. to help me identify it? I am sure that if I go into a Volvo dealer I can ask for the drain plug washer, but it is much easier for me to get to a parts store than a Volvo dealer. Thanks again for all your help guys. American cars have drain plug washers too, except they use re-useable nylon ones for some reason.
