Funky Smell After Peel N Seal

Slater

Recommended Posts

OK, so I finally finished up sound proofing all of my doors and the rear hatch in 2 layers of generic dynamat extreme (peel n seal, etc).

So now it's 95 out every day and the inside of the car just bakes. Well, since the install I have this funky smell in the car, like old moldy gym socks or something. I threw in a big gel air frehsner in the ashtray, which helped mask it a little, but now it smells like strawberry moldy gym socks.

Has anyone else that peeled n sealed their cars noticed this? Does the small go away after a while?

I didn't notice any smell as I was applying it, but it wasn't in the 90s+ when I installed it either. It was more like 70-80.

I hope it doesn't smell like this forever, it's nasty!

Not the answer you're looking for.. but is the car noticeably quieter after dynamatting?

Generic suggests the same product without the big name attached. This is not the case when it comes to a roofing product being used as a replacement for an automotive product, even given the fact that they have somewhat similar effects.

The smell should go away after a while, but it will come back from time to time, if you leave the car out in the sun on a hot day. Airing the car out after a long sit will solve that. Also check for it releasing from verticle areas in about a year if you happen to live in an area where it tends to be hot and humid for a fair amount of time. Re-check yearly. If you lived in say, Miami, for instance, I would give it 6 months of summer use (not being garaged) before it started to give.

For now just spend some time driving with the windows open and no, it won't smell like that forever. :P

Yes, it's generic. I got it off ebay. It's supposedly equivilent to dynamat extreme. Aluminum backing - good stuff.

Anyways, I'm sure it will release when it gets hot and gooey. But I think ANY of these types of products would. Hopefully the door panels will hold it in place for the most part.

Yes, it made a tremendous difference.

However, part of the reason why it made so much of a difference was in the process I found a lot of little things here and there that were contributing to the rattle. Fixing those in addition to dynamatting has made the car incredibly quiet.

For example, the 2 bolts that hold the black plastic handle thing to the door had rattled loose and almost fallen out completely on ALL FOUR doors! I retightened all the bolts on the door, and put loctite on those bolts specifically to keep th em from backing out again. Also, on the rear doors the metal lock rod that clips into the plastic handle thing rattled whenever you close the door. So I fixed that by pulling it tight to the plastic handle thing with a small zip tie. Then of course there was the $0.35 in change I found down inside one of the rear doors. I also put anti squeak tape around the whole outline of the door panel to keep it from rattling and squeaking against the door itself. And that doesn't mention the obvious fix of the rear panel trim missing half of it's broken clips.

There was a few more things here and there but the point is that I used the dynamatting as a chance to fix EVERYTHING. I really paid attention to every aspect of making the doors quieter, not just sound proofing.

I documented a lot of what I did to fix the problems and will include a writeup on the tech section of quickbrickmotorsports.com site I get it all finished.

It was generic dynamat extreme. Supposedly it's not peel n seal but identical in formulation to dynamat extreme without the dynamat name and price.

The smell is hard to describe. It stinks, but not like asphalt. It's definitely a chemical/solvent type smell that I have never smelt before on any car I've owned.

It just smells like a combination of sweaty armpits, tar I guess, and old gym socks. And of course strawberries!

Mine smelled like tar for months (although I did install it last summer), now the smell is completely gone.

Yep. I helped it out by leaving the moonroof and windows open overnight while the car was in the garage. Helped a lot.

Slater: What anti squeak tape did you use? Also where'd you acquire it?

Well long story short a cat pissed in his seat, that smell never went away, and it rained and screwed up his sun roof. LOL good times
