Abs Issues

Ok, this issue occurs on a 1999 Volvo V70 XC AWD.

The ABS light came on! I get a call from the driver who tells me the light has come on. She asks if she will be alright. The car arrives home, and the next morning I take it up and down the driveway. The brakes work (of course) but the pedal feels looser and more direct. Perhaps ABS is not working (lol). When I depress the pedal a hissing sound is apparent. Also, a kind of odd buzz can be heard immediately after the car is stopped right under the hood (only for a few seconds). Any idea what is going on? The brake fluid is full. That was my first thought bc the loose pedal. Also, is it safe to drive? I know you can function without ABS fine but confirmation would be nice. Until then my S40 will be driven.

If the hissing noise is coming from under the driver's side of the dash when you depress the brake pedal you've probably got a seal leaking on your vaccumm brake booster. Small part but requires replacing the entire booster ($485.00 USD)

Good Luck B)

So you don't think it is the ABS control unit computer? Ok, i'll check it out. Are you sure it couldn't just be a cheap hose???? :D

Autozone "CANNOT" read those codes.....I would suggest having the codes read at the dealer (only) (or an indy with the proper scan tool) the hissing is in the brake booster, sometimes there is a seal in the back that can be pushed back in from the way I understand it...I personally have never encountered this but I'm sure I will! I doubt the hissing and the ABS ...no, I know their not related. I wish these guys would stop saying to send the ABS control unit to Victor without having the codes read!!! Does the speedo cut out ? Is the Tracs light on? ....Have the codes read first is my opinion? ;)

Hearing the exact same things -- both of them -- in my '99 V70R AWD. The buzz seemed particularly strange. Also seeing the ABS and Traction Control indicators coming on.

Had to have a new in-tank fuel sending unit installed last month to address a number of issues (Check Engine light, gas gauge misreading by about two gallons), and the problem became much more frequent...

...but if I remember correctly, the brakes first started feeling a bit odd after I replaced the front pads myself. Never had any trouble doing this on our '97 850, but the V70R seemed to take more time, more caliper compression, etc.

Any thoughts on possible bad brake effects after dropping the frame to get into the gas tank (not by me, but by Swedish Auto Service in Campbell, CA), or something I screwed up myself when putting the new pads in?

Also, hissing aside, what would that odd buzz be about?

Thanks in advance for any insights.
