montgom
In my 2003 S60 with an Automatic trans and 2.4 liter motor, what fluid do I use in my power steering? DEXRON III?I assume changing it is a good idea? Bob
Bay13
Actually from 1999 to present Volvo has switched over to a clear/green synthetic power steering fluid. I'd stick with that, it handles the foaming that can happen a lot better than putting in dexron III.

Is there a non-Volvo equivalent of this clear/green syntheitc fluid? :)
Bay13
At one of the other dealers I worked at they did VWs as well and I noticed their fluid was clear/green and synthetic as well. So it's not just a Volvo thing. I'd check with your local auto stores and ask for Synthetic power steering fluid and see what they can come up with. V Tuning 850
I am pretty sure mine is red in color. When it was foaming sometime ago it looked red.

I'd stick with that, it handles the foaming that can happen a lot better than putting in dexron III.←I looked at the dipstick for my automatic transmission on my 2003 S60, non-turbo 2.4l. It said special ATF and then said look in the owmers manual. The owners manual just said ATF (not very helpful )So, per what I have learned here (in other threads), my dipstick is about 9 inches long ( 8 1/2 inches actually) Now, my shifter is P R N D 4 3 L (yes, there is no 2!!!).I am guessing three things here1) My tranny takes synthetic ATF and that synthetic tranny fluid can come from Volvo or I can use Mobil 1 synthetic Tranny fluid (which is 3309 spec) (also, Mobil apparently makes the syntetic ATF for Volvo).2) If the owners manual says to use ATF fluid in the power steering, what they mean is use synthetic tranny fluid (either Volvo ATF synthetic or Mobil 1 synthetic tranny fluid). 3) Do not use Dexron III in either the transmission or for the powering steering. BobPS Corrections, clarifications or any thing else welcomed. PSS I went to the Volvo dealer and they sold me a synthetic power steering fluid. They were "unfriendly" when I tried to buy some Volvo ATF fluid since they made it clear that it never needed to be changed. I remained calm, polite and just left with my synthetic power (Volvo brand ) steering fluid.
Bay13
Just one comment, Mobil 1 makes volvos synthetic transmission fluid to specs 3309. All mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid is not 3309 specs. So when you say you can put Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid in your car you are correct only if it's the mobil 1 3309 specs fluid. BillAileo
If the online version of your car's owner's manual is accurate, it confirms on page 148 that the fluid for your automatic transmission is "Automatic: Volvo transmission oil 1161540-8" which is Mobil 3309.The same page addresses the fluid required for your power steering as simply "ATF". I do not believe your power steering system is anywhere near as particular about the ATF used as your transmission is. However, it is probably a good idea not to mix fluids.Bottom line: do not use Dexron III in your transmission but you could probably use it as the power steering fluid.Bill

BillAileo
The distributor for northeastern Pennsylvania where I live was happy to sell it to me that way at about $43 for a case. A case was just about right when I changed the fluid in the '03 XC70. Bill
