S80 Pedal Possition Sensor

Hi everyone,

I recently had a strange thing happen to my friend's S80. by the way this is a 1999 S80 2.9 non turbo. At first the problem was that the car started up really rough, after a while it would get normal. eventually the check engine light came on and displayed a P0121 (pedal position sensor), after i cleared the code the car ran fine. then when she was bringing it over to my house, she said that the check engine light came on and the car would not accelerate AT ALL, she went 15mph for about 45m. to get the car to me. Again, after clearing the code it was fine. So yesterday i picked up the new accelerator pedal form the dealer, they dont sell the sensor seperate, and installed it and drove it for 2 hours and nothing happened, and then it did the same thing at another stoplight. My dad is a mechanic, we've been messing with it all night, spark plugs are ok, all the fuses are fine, everything is grounded properly, we're running out of ideas. it seems that the problem only occurs sometimes, out of the blue and we can't detirmine from what, it's doing it even with the new pedal. Any help would be very appriciated, the car only has 44kmiles. I'm hoping it's not the thorttle body, the car runs great, when it does, and i've hear that when those go out the car just dies. Knock on wood, my 00 S70 has 83k miles and i haven't had a single problem with it! I bought it pre-owned about 1.5 years about with 47k miles and i't s agreat car. I want to get an S80 later this year but now i'm thinking twice about it...

Thanks, Veso

If I knew the Volvo code, I could help a lot better. But ................. You said the code is for the pedal position sensor. That sensor is on the brake booster, a common failure item.

The part number for the pedal position sensor is 9441116. It is located on the brake booster. If you are looking at the booster it's on the left at about 10-11 o'clock. Before you replace it, pop the vacuum hose off the booster. (about 5:30) Releasing the vacuum will allow you to pull the sensor out once you move the ring clip that holds it in place. There is an O ring on the sensor, and if you don't release the vacuum it will be hard to pull out and the O ring can get sucked into the booster.

This is for the accelerator pedal, are you confusing the two?

Problem is the code is a P code so I really don't know for sure. But the only pedal position sensor is for the brake pedal position sensor. The one I mentioned above.

May not be the problem, just doing some cyber space trouble shooting. :P
