Kula
I have a 2000 v40 with 75K. Recently the idle begins to surge from 900 to 1300 for a few seconds at a time. At the same time the temp guage goes down then up as the idle nomaliizes. Its a little spooky while driving. Is the idle tied in with the temp sensor or thermostat? I was going to start by changing them, or should I concentrate on the throttle body. I've seen a few posts on similar problems without clear etiologies.Marc. Bay13
Haven't seen your problem, but let me say that I've replaced a lot of S/V 40 Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) sensors, so that would be a good place to start. I'd do the thermostat while I was there. The Idle surging I've seen the idle air motors with plastic pieces stuck in the IAC, so I've replaced them as well. Never hurts to clean a throttle body, but it doesn't sound like thats your problem.
Kula
I'll replace the former. how do you recommend cleaning the throttle body. Does it need to be completely removed? Thanks,Marc.
Bay13
I'd first try it with only taking the pipe off that goes into it, and use a rag and carb cleaner while holding it open, you can often do a good job that way if it's not crusted up and all. That is where my problem lied...however it could be a bad ECT sensor...the temp gauge thing gives ya' the clue B)
