My 16t + Lpt Block Experiment

Recommended Posts

Well guys, here's the info/history.

I purchased the car (1998 GLT) from the beloved JRL on Swedespeed in October. The only mods were an IPD chip, and k&n filter. I had the car dynoed in November and it put down 158 rwhp and 176 lb-ft of torque on a Mustang Dyno. Since those numbers, I have added a TME exhaust and a boost gague. The car was only making 10-10.5 lbs of boost. With this setup it ran consistant 15.1 1/4 miles at 91.5 mph. The lowest ET recorded with this setup was 14.9 and the highest trap was 92.x.

This weekend, we swapped in a straight-flanged 16t turbo, Samco turbo hose kit, 350 cc white injectors, and the ever popular Innovate LM-1 wideband O2. The stock downpipe remains, as does the IPD chip (GLT) and drop in k&n.

Initial impressions are as expected. The low end grunt of the 13g has been replaced with the high end power of the 16t. The car makes a solid 12 lbs of boost now, but it spikes to 14-15 lbs on shifts. The ECU makes the proper adjustments to the 350cc injectors at partial throttle and under 4000 rpm to keep the A/F ratios right around stoich. At wot, the car runs pretty rich. I've observed on boost A/F ratios from 10.7 to 11.3. The car feels faster, but the richness leaves much to be desired.

The car will be attending the much anticipated T-Bricks SE 4.0 meet in Alabama this weekend. There it will receive a full gammet of tests, from 1/4 mile, to freeway roll-ons, to a few dyno pulls (Dynojet I believe). I'll have some solid numbers to report a week from now. We'll probably do some swapping of injectors at the strip and possibly the dyno, to see if the 350 cc's are needed with the 16t swap or not. Scott Hart from IPD was told by MTE (their chip tuner) that the 16t + lpt block needs 350 cc injectors as well as a $400 remap. I'm trying to determine if the remap is absolutely necessary.

Anyway, there you go. Any thoughts/comments/questions?

Chris

sounds good, ill see you at the SE 4.0 meet. I know a kid on here who ran a 16T on a stock (95 turbo??) map on his lpt and ran 15 lbs of boost and his car was pretty quick. i think his VS name is 850_glt but i havent seen him post on here lately. best of luck. -Ryan

So at WOT regardless of RPM its running 10-11:1 correct? Gee wouldn't that go right along the lines of what I've been saying (and Chris knows too) for months?

Sounds good. Im SURES theres plenty of power to be had still :D

Well, the thing is, it's hard to go WOT below 4000 rpms without it downshifting. I'm going to be messing with it/observing the WB all week to try and get a better idea of whats going on. It does appear this is the case.

As far as power goes, I'd love to feel the difference a nice 12.5 A/F ratio would produce. In doing the megasquirt tuning on redblocks, the difference in pull on boost is HUGE when looking at 11.0 compared to 12.5. :)

Yep, I agree. Getting the timing spot on is even more dramatic! A nice long low 3rd gear pull would probably let you see what its doing down low for AFR's. Im SURE its going to be like that across the board.

If you have them available you could give 315CC injectors a try.

Yeah, thats what actually came on the car :) So I do have those to try as well. We went with the 350 cc's just to be safe. I'd really like to do back to back dyno pulls with the two different injectors but I doubt time will allow it. I'll have to settle for 1/4 mile trap speeds I guess.

I have a 16t upgrade on my LPT block, and I'm considering about getting a Speedtuning ecu upgrade. I talked to a person who had this ecu upgrade and was running it with the white 350cc injectors, and he said his car was running rich. I'm wondering if a Speedtuning chip with the orange 315cc injectors would solve everything. I only have an R/T5 ecu with my 16t with the orange injectors now, but I don't have a wideband or anything, nor have I been to a dyno yet. Like Johann said, try the 315cc injectors.

Sounds good man :)

Looking forward to seeing it at the meet. You may try playing with the adjustable w/g actuator rod in conjunction with a boost controller to steady your boost levels... Though a 3 psi spike is not bad on these cars, and I doubt you'll hold much higher than 12 psi at redline without spiking much higher.

YA HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it's about time, dynoed with 16t white injectors with speedtunig 13g program and 16t white injectors 98t5 ecu both times very rich.I have yet to dyno with 315cc injectors both runs produced about 192 to the wheels but super rich I think there is more with a good tune.
