Performance Options For 1999 S70?

Is it an NA S70 or some turbo variant?

K&N air filters -- even without an accompanying exhaust upgrade -- have made an appreciable difference in four cars in which I've installed them:

'90 780 Turbo

'92 240 NA

'97 850 NA

'99 V70R AWD (high-pressure turbo)

The NA cars, to my surprise, gained the biggest increase in get-up-and-go, it seems -- particularly the 850 (which really needed it).

Not so big a power boost in the Turbos, but both felt smoother, like they really were able to breathe more easily. The V70R may have become slightly louder, too.

An employee also reported a noticable increase after installing one in his '95 BMW M3 after he felt the V70R's performance.

The only car in which I feel the K&N filter hasn't made such a big difference is the '99 C70 Convertible, which has the light-pressure turbo engine. No perceptible change in sound, maybe a *slight* increase in power at the low-end. Could just be due to the spooling nature of the light-pressure turbo, and in retrospect it does feel a bit peppier than another '99 C70 Convertible I test drove a few years ago (and passed on since it felt fairly weak).

Since the engine computer in these things is adaptive based on one's driving style, it could just be that my new toy is getting used to me and that one I drove a few years ago was used to someone who always stuck to the speed limit.

Haven't tried any ECU upgrades yet. Options for the '99's seem very limited, and I'm in California, which further impedes the quest.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys......This is my first Euro car as I've had nothing but old school american(chevy) hot rods. Needed something for a daily driver to haul the kid around in and that was also sporty and quick. I've always liked Volvos and that's all my neighbor drives so I kind of got talked into one. So far I love it! I'm in Texas and I'm sure an intercooler would help but that's an expensive upgrade.

So I guess either way, the K&N is the way to go if not just for performance, but to save $$ on filters in the future. They've always made a difference on V8's that I've built. I just wasn't sure if it would help on this application.

So is the low pressure turbo smaller than the high pressure turbo? Or is it just the boost that's different? I'm still tempted to do the boost controller I just don't want to break anything.

Thanks,

B

What kind of engine do you have, makes a difference on boosting up grades.

As far as exhaust goes if you are going to stick with a Volvo turbo you don't need to go bigger than 2 1/2 inch on the exhauts, the Volvo turbos can't out flow the 2.5.

If you have a turbo.

I have the 2.4L turbo. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just throw an intercooler on it if I can find one cheap. The one I saw new was like $1200 and it seemed to be a little over kill. I think I'll leave the exhaust alone. So, raising the boost, adding an intercooler and throwing a better air filter seems like the best way to go. Thoughts?

the aftermarket IC is a waste unless you really start getting serious, IE: a huge new turbo.

get a chip and exhaust, and call it good.

What ECU are you running? Does the ECU manipulate the boost or just fuel curves and timing?

What exhaust are you running/recommend?

Thanks,

B

If you want the most economical ECU, speedtuning is the way to go. if you want the best, RICA is the way to go. If you want the most expensive, IPD/TME is your best bet.

the best exhaust is a 2.5" mandrel bent custom done in whatever material you want, done by your local exhaust shop.

Kevin why is RICA the "best"? Just wondering why you make that assertion.

In my observations on the dyno IPD makes the best power everytime. But the differences amongst the chips is so minor in a bolt on application there really aren't many factors you should worry about. Only one is do you want a reflash or a soldered chip.
