DouginDenver
In a post a couple threads down about whether a K&N filter makes a difference, the poster said it did on all his cars except maybe a '99 C70 LPT, but that his C70 was peppier than a C70 he had driven a few years ago. Then he said this: "Since the engine computer in these things is adaptive based on one's driving style, it could just be that my new toy is getting used to me and that one I drove a few years ago was used to someone who always stuck to the speed limit."What does that really mean? I always assumed that if I pressed the gas a certain way, the ECU did whatever was necessary to mix fuel and air and time spark and whatever the ECU does whether it was me pressing the gas for the first or hundredth time, or my grandmother doing it - that the ECU would react the same to the same pedal input. No? How does that work?
the underlørd
I've always assumed this was BS..but I'd like to know the real answer too.
Bay13
The TCM Trans has adaptives that are like you describe, but not the engine, the adaptives in the engine are for short and long term fuel trim, not your driving style.
V70-AAAHHHRRR
Yes, what I referred to was in regard to transmission response. There's a statement in one of the UK brochures which reads:"The five-speed adaptive automatic monitorsyour driving style and then automaticallyselects one of two gearshift modes: 'Sport' forfaster shifts down and higher performance, or'Economy' for lower fuel consumption andcleaner emissions."There's a post elsewhere, either here or on Swedespeed, in which somebody else alluded to the system taking some time (30 days?) to "learn" the driver's style. Included in the post was a question, from a used C70 buyer like myself, asking if there was anyway to reset it and let it "relearn" its new driver's style. And I could have sworn I read something almost verbatim to that in some Volvo publication, but of course now I can't find it....So, regarding that transmission adapability, is it continually learning, or, if not, is there a way to reeducate it when a new driver takes the helm?-KB

V70-AAAHHHRRR
well, we just deduced that that's wrong. ←...which leaves open just the question of whether the transmission adaptation is continually learning or learns to a certain point and then figures it knows all it needs to know. It might be nice if it resampled as often as say, the AvgMPG or AvgMPH readings in the trip computer.Probably all in my head, but I do feel like my C70 is zippier than it was when I bought it a month ago.-KB
gdizzle
Didn't the adaptive trans come on the '00 plus volvos?

Bay13
It is an on going adaptation, so drive it like you do and over time it will change.
MrWinkey
I guess that means drive it like you stole it? For about 90%
PorBleemo
So for the regular pre-99 850s the TCM and ECU will not "adapt"?

Guest Guest
I always wondered why they got rid of the sport/econ mode switch....I Quess it is automatic, but how soon do you get the sport mode when driving as such?
