Shifter Stuck In Park

The gear selector in my 98 S70 will not come out of park unless the shiftlock release button is engaged. I located the repair instructions in the repair maintenance section (bay 13) but think it may be for an 850. The dealer quoted me $195 dollars to repair this problem and recommended replacement of both the shiftlock microswitch and another switch located somewhere near the brake pedal. Does anyone have experience with this? If so how hard is it to fix? I went to the junkyard and found a couple S70 and V70's but wasn't sure what the part looks like or what exactly I needed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ruftek. :D

It's very common problem. Maybe go to a private mechanic to get it fixed.

I am not a mechanic by any means, but I am somewhat mechanically inclined and I was able to replace the solenoid and microswitch (bought as one unit) on my 97 850 R myself. It was a pain because of where it is located and my eyesight is not that good. You have to really look carefully on how the microswitch is positioned and put the new one in the same way. It took me about three hours to remove the console, replace the switch and put the console back in. Fixed the problem too. Much of that time was spent trying to figure out how to get the microswitch back in since I did not pay close attention while taking it out and the picture was not very clear to me on this website. Once I got it then I could see what they were saying in the writeup and showing in the picture.

good luck with the job man!!!

I think you're referring to the brake pedal switch under the dash...it loses some of it's soldered points and clicks and stuff and doesn't function all the time....that's an easy fix from what Rich told me, though I haven't done it myself....

I've done the microswitch... as long as you have LOTS of light, it goes pretty smoothly. I never had to do the brake pedal one, though. the directions are accurate and I didnt have any surprises. I'd start with the microswitch (cheap) and then go from there. Basic tools and patience is all that's needed. Good Luck!!! :)

You can confirm which part you need. With a multimeter, see if you have 12V at the shift micro switch when you step on the brake, if not then it's the brake switch. If you have the voltage on one side of the microswitch but not the other then it's the microswitch.
