Looking To Buy A Second Volvo - Need Advice

OK, I am looking at a 98-01 V70. Either a T5 or R AWD. Looking to spend around $9-11k and mileage around 100k.

I haven't paid much attention to the years that are "crap". I seem to think 99-00 are the years with all the problems.

Anyways, it's for my wife. I'm sure she'd feel safer with an AWD but a FWD with TRACS will do just fine in the show around here. So I guess I would consider both.

I know a lot of the other problems to check for (evap core, and other maintanance issues like oil leaks, etc) but I am basically clueless with it comes to the reliability and problems associated with the AWD trannies, electronics TBs, etc.

Also, what's the difference between the XC70 and the V70XC? One has some ugly bumpers but the engine and interior looks the same.

Thanks,

- Slater

Best bet for reliability would be the '98 IMO. No ETM, no other complicated crap (complicated is relative). A good choice in my opinion would be a '98 V70R. It's AWD, has plenty of power, and isn't ugly. From '98 to '00, the V70 and the V70 XC look the same. The newer XC70's ('01 and on) are the fugly ones that like like they're trying to be SUV's. The older XC70's were just called V70 XC's.

Personally, I agree with the '98 part, but not about AWD. I would stay away from it. What do I base that opinion on? Lot's of reading and stories about AWD issues. Is any of it true? I don't know ... this is the internet remember? But think about this ... if it was such a reliable, bulletproof system then why would I hear anything negative about it, true or half-true? Hence the reason I bought the '98 V70 T5.

you've listed the same car.

you have this:

V70 Base (NA)

V70 GLT (lpt)

V70 AWD (lpt)

V70 T5 (hpt)

V70 R (hpt awd)

V70XC (lpt)

Actually in VADIS and all Volvo literature they list an XC70 and a V70 XC.

I know they are "the same" car, but they were distinctly different models.

98 please!

even my dealership said to stay away from 99's

too many problems

i'm loving my 98 T5

That's what I'm thinking. I think I have it narrowed down to either a 98 V70R or a 01 V70 T5.

I found a 01 V70 T5 with 100k and also a 98 V70R AWD with 105K, both within my price range and both in mint condition.

Slater, since I have both, a '98 V70T5 and a '99 V70R AWD I would say, go with the R if it's for your wife. The AWD is really great. Just go over the system with a fine tooth comb. If the system was well cared for, they're not problem matic. The problem is, people don't know how to care for them and end up frying the VC and the Bevel gear. The AWD does GREAT in the snow. The only bad thing about the '99 and "00 is the ETM other than that, it's no more problem matic than the '98s. Infact, the '99 + do not have the stupid air pump, thats a typical 700-900 dollar repair. They due suffer from the same ABS BS and other problems the '98s had.

P2 makes a much better "wifes" car. Much smoother and more refined ride.

Is AWD traction a concern?

I would say so since he lives in the midwest, but I guess he should be the one to answer that...

No, it's not. It shows here about 3xs a year.

It's just when you have a typical chick that wants a "safe" car to put your kid in, most chicks think AWD is "safest" because of all of the Subaru and SUV commercials.

Now, I like AWD for badass burnouts and neck-snapping launching. If you've ever owned a potent 1G Eclipse GSX you know what I'm talking about ;0)
