Observations With The Egr System

its funny because volvo is the leader in the new diesels and thier EGR and what not for smog .... nevermind the biggest problem w/ diesels are the NOx emissions which EGR is made to remove(Hence y cali almost outlawed the sales of all new diesel cars because they didn't meet the NOx spec

and yea i do my part i eat way to much meat than one should .. must kill those cows

and yea i'm all for going after the big companys that make all of the smog and letting all of the cars go back to being just a big displacement engine w/ one or two things on it and that's it .. none of this smog crap but its how it is as we all know those big companys will never stop polluting so someone has to do something  ..

and yea i know we each have our own opinion on it .. and like i said if you can do it all and still pass smog more power to ya.  but in the real world i've seen cars w/ bad egr's or clogged ones running like jerk, having all kinds of running issues.  so saying that 90% of the cars here have clogged systems is kind of hard to say if the cars are showing no signs of problems.

See now you're making sense.

I'm gonna go eat a big AZZ steak while I think this whole EGR thing over. haha

On 3 850s I have worked on now, all 3 had clogged EGRs. Including my car. And since Volvo recommends you clean the EGR system @100k, I assumed the problem was widespread and affected most cars with 100k+

egr on my car was clogged @ 90k causing that metal pipe to back up and burst a nice hole in it so ... hell most all chevy astro vans(along w/ many other cars) are known for having EGR valves get clogged and stick and cause the car to run like crap .. i know i spent 8+ months working on a few of them that kept coming back for the same issues .. fuel injection assembly leaking causing the car to run rich and stall and like crap also clogging/sticking EGR valve causing all kinds of pinging and knocking @ part throttle

if you can remove the egr right most go w/o problems and some claim better milage but that's more of an issue of a different ECU tune as cars w/ EGR's typically run more timing

tho there are just as many cars that do it and lose all kinds of milage ... my firebird went from 15mpg in smog form fully street legal tune .. to 9mpg on my custom carb setup and egr delete

and dyno gains on egr delete is 1-10whp .. so that amount of power can be made up from 1 more psi or boost so eh. the power gain from the blocked EGR is more from a cleaner air charge vs the dirty stuff going back in

Actually, when I disabled my EGR I saw LESS pinging and knocking.

But as I mentioned I have one of these on the way, which will show AFR, EGT, and knock! Hell yizahh beotch:

was this @ part throttle where EGR is supposed ot work or @ w0t? like i said volvo's design on thsoe cars might cause a heat soak issue that hurts more than anything

and reason most newer cars don't have EGR is because yes it is a temp fix/bandaid as the newer cars have much more advanced injection design that allows it to run cleaner/right w/o the need for egr

as volvo might of used the egr to drop the readings to a safe level and then figured out they can get around having it w/ a little more tuning as they/car companys got scared stupid in the late 80's/early 90s when it came to smog and requiring egr

Hence why I recommend using a 96-97 ECUm since this is when Volvo took another look at the system and realized they didn't need EGR as there was a "better way".

yea but if they used all of the same engine parts and sensors i find it hard that just a little tuning did the trick where as before they couldn't spend some time to set it up like that to begin w/

that or just when OBD II came around they finally had the standards to be able to read all that is really going on or something. its just all of the $ they wasted on designing the EGR system along w/ the parts could of just been spent on that little bit of dyno time and they would of had it from the begining ... i know in 97' they did use the flat flange turbos so i wonder if that made the change in flow that heated up the cat sooner or something as that's just really odd

I'm curious to see if Rich has anything to say about this.  It seems that (no offense) Slater and thelostartof are going to keep debating and not come to a conclusion.

Rich is a Volvo mechanic. I would imagine he will probably just provide the official Volvo answer (i.e. it's there for a reason, hook it up - it's your friend, etc.) since his job is to clean and fix the EGR systems, not rip it out and bypass it. Know what I mean?

Anyways, I have already come to my own conclusion. It's just before everyone else believes me I am going to have to provide more hard data, which I can't until I hook up my R-500 which is currently in the mail.
