Observations With The Egr System

i'm very very interested in exploring this

also, the airmod, i have the fuse box o nthe driver's side. There's two seals around it. The long one that stretches across the entire top, and another one that surrounds the top. What am I supposed to do to create this flow? Cut the seal after the fuse box and remove the piece stretching across the engine?

You want to LEAVE the seal around the airbox and ABS computer.

Basically I cut the front seal right about at the engine torque mount. The section of seal from passenger side windshield wiper to the torque mount got removed. The section from the torque mount to the driver's side (including the ABS computer and fuse box) stayed. Your car is the same as this, except your driver and passenger positions are reveresed. But you would still follow the instructions the same.

Understand?

yeah I think so, so basically I'd be removing the seal from the center (torque mount) all the way over to the pass side, leaving the right driver's part (abs module and fusebox) intact.

I also did the seal cut job ~18" from the drivers side. Wow! you can really feel the heat escape from there! I also saved my seal to be reinstalled when our -30 Degree F. winters roll around.

I'm still considering the egr removal mod. but I also want to be able to revert back for our winters... (thinking that it will help keep the engine warmer in the winter)

slater - did you ever check out what the resistance was for that temp sensor? I could probably heat it up and check the resistance over the line, but if you have it readily available, that would work too! Thanks! :D

I pulled that rear weatherstrip on my drive home today from Palo Alto. My oil temps ran about 5* cooler than before. .. so thats an improvement right ;)

Nice. So all we need to do now is see what the long tern effects are.

I.e. more dirt in engine bay, any negative effects, etc. Has anyone been through the rain with the seal removed yet? I haven't.

Also, anyone done the washers yet either?

Noobie Question: How to check if my car has the EGR system or not?

I know my car isn't US spec, but I'm not 100% sure if it's exactly European. It might be Arabian Gulf special edition

If it's not US-spec I'm almost positive you don't have it.

However, you will know if you have it if you have a 93-95 car, and there is a metal pipe with a threaded end that goes from the side of the exhaust manifold (right in the corner of the turbo heat shield) and snakes around to a big round EGR valve bolted to the front underside of the intake manifold right to the left of the throttle body.

Nope... I imagine I'll probably put it back in when I wash the car.

That can become VERY inconvenient...

but oh well.. so is everything else I do when I wash my car :P

I think as long as you are not directly spraying into that area, you should be fine.

I checked it the other day and looked at the angle of my hood being closed.

PLUS, without that seal, there still remains that little plastic lip.

The only water that would get in is 1) if you blow dry your car like me, 2) spray water into that area in an angle, or with enough that it would go in, 3) if the water that does get into that area rolls down the inner lip of that rear hood into the engine bay.

I'll let you all know tomorrow when I wash & blow dry :)

Indeed. Plus the way my driveway is slopped it should keep it dry inside as well.

I think rain would be perfectly fine.  Dirt and snow would probably become a problem though...

Well, regardless I'm not worried about it. As GShyneDM pointed out, the actual opening is a 3-4 inches BEHIND the egde of the hood, AND has a 1" raised lip on the front. Maybe if you like to drive in reverse on the highway in terential downpours a lot you would have to worry about it. I mean c'mon people, the whole UNDERSIDE of the engine is open. The FRONT of the engine has a giant grille in it. The engine is designed to get dirt and moisture on it.

That's why man invented Simple Green and the garden hose.
