Thought I'd share my experience with bumper guards like these. Maybe the Volvo ones are made differently, but the ones that are used for Mazda MPV vans are crap (yes, my wife has a minivan, sue me :P ) . I'm sure they're all pretty much the same ... a rubber or abs plastic piece adhered to the bumper with double-sided tape. The problems I have encountered, as well as many other MPV owners, is that the protector eventually will come loose. When it does it interferes with the proper closing of the tailgate and may even rub the lower lip of the gate every time it is shut, which will lead to paint scuffing/damage. Another issue is that since these things don't hermetically seal to the bumper around the entire perimeter, you will get water and dirt/sand accumulations under the protector. I sort of view these things the same way I relate to front-end bra's ... they seem like a great idea, but they're more trouble than they're worth. Just my .02

Normally I wuld agree with this but have you ever seen an XC closeup? Even old ones (98) look fine. No peeling or lifted up protectors...

I'm sure it will be fine.

is it a thick piece of rubber material or just tape?

Soft plastic, probably PMME. Should be made out of the same or similar stuff the trim that goes all the way around the 850 is. Also the same as the muflaps, wheelwell liners, splashguard, etc.

No, I've never seen an XC close-up ... and I was hoping Volvo would have a better product. Sounds like that's the case. I may look into this too for my V70. Mazda isn't known for well thought-out dealer accessories.

You know, another slick idea that would be a cheap solution would be to hit up your local skateboard shop and get a couple feet of skateboard grip tape.  Than cut it and form it to the bumper how you want.

Hell ya, then ollie and curb grind that isht!

I use grip tape on a lot of stuff. Instead of using some fancy pedals on the 240, I used grip tape from a busted deck I had on the clutch and brake pedals [did'nt use it on the gas pedal for obvious reasons]. Worked awesome for autocross!

I just bought my first Volvo about a month ago, 98 V70 AWD. The bumper is kinda ruff. I just ran across this post and this part is exactly what I need. When you get the part, tell what you think about it. myswedishparts.com doesn't really give good info on products.

Thanks, dave
