will car (steering, alignment) notice the difference if only one sway bar end link is replaced......the other one is apparently still ok; no, I'm not cheap, the dealer is....the car is still under warranty, few miles left......so I figure they are waiting for better yield on work + parts <_<

For an end link, as long as the other one is ok, then you shouldn't have a problem. The dealership may be trying to make a buck, but they aren't going to send you out with a handling problem.

If the dealer replaces both and Volvo calls for the parts, and one isn't bad then the dealer eats the cost, and thats not going to happen.

They usually take that chance in order to increase the potential for customer satisfaction. If you replace one and a few months later the other goes bad, the customer may think, at least initially, you messed up or missed something.

Same thing with bulbs, spring seats, struts, and other "wear items" no?

This is perfectly stated Rich! The dealer is holding the check book for the manufacturer. No Service Manager would want to have to be put in a position to explain to the dealer principle of why he is having a chargeback. A warranty is just what it implies, to repair manufacturer defects for a defined term. If willy-nilly parts replacement to pad the bill would not be acceptable on a customer pay job, why would one think it would be okay in warranty periond?

Like Starfish said if you wouldn't do it with customer pay bills or repairs why would you do it with warranty? If the item is broken burned out etc. it will be replaced. Sometimes we have guidance from Volvo, like if you replace one light do both or all 4, but not so with struts, spring seats etc.

and buy the way "wear items are customer pay", not covered by warranty.

CSI is a strange beast, and it all starts with a relationship with the service writer.

Now if I can just get a CSI program started for the things in my life that really matter, like the doctors, dentist, motor vechicles departments, dinning facilities, internet sites, popcorn makers at the movies. :P
