I Need Interior Wood

Ok here is my idea. I want to mount a boost gauge in the air vent to the left of the steering wheel. My idea was to cut out the vent slats and keep the stock trim of the vent. I was then going to mount the gauge where the vent slats were to fill in the remainder of the space I was goin to match it with the same color wood as my interior then put the gauge in the middle of the wood. I hope that all make sense. SO where can I find some wood like my interior? My interior color is charcoal with dark wood. Is there a name for this color of wood. Thanks!!!! :)

It's not a name for the color - it's name for the actual type of wood. I have a '99, and I'm failry sure they used the same type in those two years. It is walnut burl. Walnut being the species and burl meaning the wood is from the burl of a tree - which is one of the knobby tumors you see on some trees. They make the grain grow in circles insted of straight lines. You need a small piece of walnut burl veneer - real thin. Glue it to a stable substrate like MDF or plywood and go at it. Whart size town do you live in? You may be able to buy walnut burl veneer locally. If not, let me know and I can tell you some places to get it.

Heck you are from Columbus - you will have several local choices. Look for a local Rockler Tool and Hardware store.

And unfinished walnut is not as dark as what is in your car. It will look about the color of cinnamon, but will darken when finished. You will have to buy more than you need, so experiment with a couple finishes. Put gloss poly as a final, but to darken it a tad first, try a coat of boiled linseed oil - available at any Ace etc. Make sure it says boiled. Regular linseed oil takes a month to dry. And no, it is not actually boiled. It means it has metallic drying agents added. If that doesn't darken it enough, try a coat of garnet shellac as your first coat. Make sure it's garnet (dark), and make sure it says dewaxed. Also availble at Ace, Home Depot, etc. And in case I have not given you enough useless information, shellac is bug poop dissolved in alcohol. No kidding.

WOW thanks for all of that.  I will start on that Sat. and get back with what ever I find.

Oh, and veneer can be purchased several different ways, including real thin on a paper backing. But what you will buy at a place like Rockler is just real thinly sliced solid wood. It will be somewhat wavy. Don't worry about that. For a piece the size you need it won't matter. Just dampen it a bit and press it between two boards and wax paper in a vice overnight. It will be flat enough to glue. Use regular wood glue - not a whole lot - maybe even buy the type for dark woods that is colored brown - and press your veneer substrate beween the same two boards and wax paper in a vice overnight. Make the veneer hang over the edges a little, and trim when dry. I would cut your subtrate to fit your dash hole before veneering. Not that it probably matters in a piece that size, but to ensure that your substrate stays stable, it is usually recommended to veneer both sides.

One more thing - garnet shellac is often called orange shellac.
