StansMan
My S70 didn't make hardly any turbo woosh when it was new. People who rode in the car didn't believe it had a turbo. After 70k of stomping on it every chance I get, the turbo is sounding quite nice. Oh yeah i took out the sound deadening crap under the hood...that made a little difference. Be careful if you do this though becuase it makes the hood a bit lighter. I used to have to push the hood all the way up when the insulation was in there. I had it on jack stands in the garage to change the oil a little while back, went to open the hood and just let go without thinking after i unlatched it. Let's just say there was a lot of swearing involved, and now i shed a tear every time i look at the front of the car close up :(
Volvokiller
All this talk of turbo whooshing makes me think whooshing = bearing noise. These Mitsu turbos have been known to develop bearing noise as they age. New turbo = no whooshing. Eh?

Eh?←I heard a brand new Garrett Gt-28 rs with an external gate yesterday, it certainly wooshed away..I really have noticed though, that with a MBC, the turbo is much louder than with the BCS, odd but maybe true. Everytime I run someone, no matter what car their in, they tell me how loud the turbo is.
BenW
My GTI had a snorkel on the air box that if you took out changed the sound quite a bit.Dont know if I want to go that far, just a little whoosh is all im after, no supra style black hole sucking everything in around it sound. Volvokiller
I heard a brand new Garrett Gt-28 rs with an external gate yesterday, it certainly wooshed away..←Yeah, but thats a HELL of a lot more turbo than a freakin 15g. I was stating the possibilty as to why the newer 16t was quieter than the 100,000 mile 15g.
EricF
Yeah, but thats a HELL of a lot more turbo than a freakin 15g. I was stating the possibilty as to why the newer 16t was quieter than the 100,000 mile 15g.←It's possible...But my 57 trim T3/T04E at 20 psi didn't make *that* much noise with open MAF I think the smaller turbos seem to make a little more noise at the same boost level because they inherently have to turn quite a bit more RPM... But I really don't know, I think it depends mostly on muffling and how the turbo spools (like Ben said, MBC probably makes a difference, since the turbo RPM can get way up before the exhaust level does). maiku
taking off the hood insulation makes quite a difference..and maybe the K&N...and cleaning out the airbox.there were tons of leaves and stuff in mine
JPdelucs
I have an S60 2.4t ... wishing it was louder too. But...what the HECK is this sound...it's always made this sorta " breathing " sound when I hit the gas at low rpm and never really knew what it was. Anyone know ?CBV maybe?? (right click save as)(hopefully geocities will hold up bandwidth wise...) and also..why is it so loud? or is that normal..?
TorqueSteer
I have the exact same sound, do you have the stock airbox or cone filter?

TorqueSteer
i didn't notice that sound until I put a cone filter on there, but I don't think its bad at all.
blown_volvo850r
Drop a nut in the intake track. It'll really make that turbo sing ←HAHAHAHAHA! Yeah that was hilarious...Eric's reply was even funnier.Putting a cone filter in will make it a ton louder. The spooling sound gets seriously muffled w/ a stock air box on there.~Lee
Guest Guest
Hmmm....my 850 with Upsolute chip, K&N, and custom cat back performs very strongly.Yet- I am not aware of any significant "whoosh". I booost clear off to the right of my stock boost gauge. What am I missing ? How come no "whoosh" ?
