You checked the bulb, and said they are good, assuming this is correct then there is not power at the socket, you might check for that. After that you are talking a visit to a repair facility. The CEM (central electronic module) up front sends a request back to the REM, (Rear electronic module) for the lights to be turned on. That whole flow line from the brake pedal to the socket will need to be checked ouit with a schematic and multimeter to figure out the problem.

I'm going to check for power in sockets; clean contacts as well;

my spoiler brake light still works.......would this be on the same loop as main brake lights ?

why car manufacturers don't post relays map/guide only fuses ?

The relay is on the REM. Not sure which one. I think it's RMI5 or 15. The recall involves replacing the single relay with two on a few vehicles.

Try gently tapping on the REM with the brake pedal depressed to see if the brake lights flicker.

Why not take it to the dealer? Check for open recalls?

Rich: Our 2002 S60 has an issue where the bulb's heat melts the bulb holder. It cause the contacts to move and short. I fixed it temporarily but it continue to move and sometimes the bulb goes out (doesn't make a contact).

I assume that this is a problem with the design (the other side holder is okay though), was there a recall for this?

its RMI 5 & 6 position; these relays are under the trim (which I hate touching :excl: ), but there is a single bolt at the bottom of the panel, that looks like a holding bolt for the whole panel, am I right to unbolting and sliding the whole panel out to the back in order to expose relays for the removal ?......just trading here lightly

To remove that panel there's a single 10mm in the top corner where the cargo cover sits near the rear seatback. The bolt I'm assuming that you're talking about is, another 10mm that holds the multi-connector to the REM.

Once you remove the side panel just push up on the tap and pull out to release the REM if you need to. You shouldn't have to remove the REM though unless you're checking the connection at the relays. You can pull the relays out without removing the REM.

by the way: I assume the fuse(#2 I think?)is good?

I've not seen or remember a recall for what you describe. 2002 should be under warranty still, unless your mileage is over 50K. If it's still covered under warranty take it in and show them so they will replace it. If it's out of warranty, get ahold of FCPgroton for the part.

thanks highspeed, yes I checked bulbs+fuse;

I did remove panel and removed the relay; tried to use 2 relays from 03MY car; no effect; parts no. of these 2 relays from 03 MY are different from what SB calls to use ie.8651661, maybe that's the reason........

I know some of you may think I am nuts, will burn, damage parts......but can not help it......the equiring mind :rolleyes:

I hope Im still on the right track.......if this were a brake switch, the spoiler light would not work either, right ?

regards

Did you ever try tapping on the REM? Check the connection on the back where the relays go and also jiggle the multi-connector at the bottom. If your bulbs are ok you may have several DTCs set.

I'm not sure we can help you much further without a wiring diagram or any DTCs. I'm not sure the part numbers matter. I think all relays on the REM(I could be mistaken)are the same part number now.

Okay, gotcha. Thanks Rich! I'll see what they say about it.
