98 S70 Turbo Headache!

Here's the situation...Back in 1998 I purchased my S70 glt brand new from the dealer and immediately fell in love with it. Over the passed several years, I've managed to rack up quite a bit of miles on it (207,000K)because I go to school at SDSU and my friends and folks live up in Orange County Ca,. I'm very knowledgable about Volvo's and automobiles in general and have kept my S70 meticulously maintained. I believe in changing the oil every 2,500-3,000 miles using either Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 synthetic and recently had a full tune-up, including new: Volvo spark plugs, Bosch plug wires, fuel filter, air filter, cap and rotor etc. I have thousand of dollars worth of reciepts and spent $4,500 dollars about a year ago at Orange County Volvo.

About a week after the tune-up, I was driving and my car suddenly lost power and stalled. It then started back up and I took it to San Diego Volvo with a check engine light on. They told me it was my MAF which I had just changed 50,000 miles previously. So too make a long story short I replaced my MAF myself with a brand new Bosch unit and had the adaptivity reset at Orange County Volvo.

Fast forward a couple more weeks and still having intermittent stalling problems and shutter or loss of power when driving 30-45 miles per hr. Ok, at this point I was thinking was else could it be a dirty throttle body, a bad TPS sensor, A dirty idle control valve, a faulty turbo control valve, boost leak, vacuum leak etc. I then paid 95$ and had a diagnostic at "The Volvo Dr" in Fountain Valley Ca, this place is a joke, do not go here. I repeat do not go here!

The tech took my car home over night and drove it 88 miles with a fuel pressure regulator and that's all I got for 95$ and an empty tank of gas. They then said they could not find any codes or problem. The next day my car stalled on the 5 fwy almost causing me to get in an severe accident. I demanded my money back from "The Dr" and they hesitantly refunded it. About a week later, and being extremely frustrated by the lack of competent Volvo mechanics in O.C I was recommended "Swedecar" in Torrance, CA by a fellow VolvoSpeed Member.

I left my car here for about three days and he said my car runs, quote: "like a champ". He said he tested the amperage of my fuel pump, as well as other parameters such as fuel injector opening and closing, oxygen sensors etc. He charged 60$ and seems very competent and supposedly has worked on Volvo taxis for 8 yrs back in Europe. He said he compared my car with another 98 S70 with only 30k miles and mine runs just as good as that one.

So basically I have had my car looked at by three places in the last 2months or so and no one can find any problems, it seems better after I had Anders look at it at Swedecar but still a drop n RPMs every so often. Sorry to talk your ear off, but what do you guys think? Does my ECM need to be reflashed?

I know my car is old but I cannot imagine parting from it and maybe it just needs a turbo rebuild or upgrade, but I drive alot and this is why I have kept the engine upgrades to a minimum. Reliabilty is my main concern! My previous vehicle was an S10 truck with airbag suspension and 18"s, and this was a headache!

I just want my Volvo S70 to drive and feel like the day I drove it off the lot of Scandia Volvo back in 98. Besides the obvious, what can I do to bring my Volvo back to life. It still runs strong and burns no oil, while boosting around 7-8lbs consistently, with no check engine light. The only two things I have never replaced is the 13g turbo and fuel pump. I also have a 2002 S60 2.4t and have to admit I kinda like how my S70 drives better. It's feels more rigid and solid on the highway. Maybe it's time to get rid of it, but not sure, because I'm emotionally connected to it>

Thanks For your time! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ruftek
