Guest Travis
We had our car serviced today and as I was driving it to the service shop we noticed it pulling to the left. I ask them to take a look and they told me that the bushings in both front control arms are bad and they said we had to replace both front control arms. Our 2001 V70XC has been service regularly and we treat this car great. First - Do you have to replace the control arms if your bushings are bad? Why can't you just replace the bushings? They gave us an estimate of $675 - is this right??? Also, why on this car are we having to do this when we take care of this car the way we do and we drive on good roads, etc.? Help!!! merlin390
the repair can be done with common hand tools. change the parts out yourself then go get a 4 wheel alignment
Bay13
Bushings are made of rubber and they wear out, nothing you did, it just happens. You are not going to replace your bushings on the control arm on your car at home. They have to be pressed in and out and we have a special tool that does the front and another set up for the rear of the control arm. ( If you have a press with the adaptors I take it all back.)PS I just read your post again and if they are going to replace the entire control arm say, NO, you can buy just the bushings and press them in. I'd give you the part numbers but there are chassi breaks that determine your actual part.
Guest Guest
Thanks so much for the information. I am glad to hear we can replace the bushings. Should I be concerned about the integrity of a shop that tells me to replace the entire arm? Also, we will be registering for sure!
Bay13
If the shop isn't a dealer, they may not have the special tool set up. If it's a dealer they should have the special tools and people that know how to use them. Your call on the integrity.
dtlayman
We registered. We should probably ask what else might be causing the car to pull to the left. Again, thanks for the help.
Bay13
Alignment is the first thing that comes to mind. After doing an alignment and everything was in specs, if it still pulled, it could be the tires. Swap the two front tires (unless they are directional tires) and see if the pulling goes away. Lastly, the bushings in the control arm, might cause pulling.??? never ran across that before but I could see it happening.
dtlayman
Thanks again. We are looking into an alignment. It sounds like we may go the dealer, although we would like to find out more about how to qualify a local shop to do this in the future.
