rodrigo
man is it a pain to replace the dist cap and rotor. the plugs went to no problem, the wires went well...i labeled everything with numbers and it was foolproof. But, , what were they thinking to put the distributor there...i was always fooling around with the bottom part of the airbox...moving it from one place to another to get the screws in/out to tighten the cap.well, in the end, it all went in, it all works well, and it looks real clean after fooling around with the plastic clip on the side of the head to hold the cables. i just thought it was a bit of a pain for something that is 'supposed' to be changed at regular intervals. then i was thinking...where else could it go?oh, well. good end-result...thats really what matters. merlin390
ummmmm....why didn't you just take the air box out? unclip the mass air meter, hose, snorkle for outside air and the it just pulls out.
rodrigo
because to pull the box out, i'd have to unscrew some sensoe on the distributor side of the airbox, and i tried to get at it, but it was apain to get a torx in there, so i just moved it around. the yop of the box i was able to position up by the brake fluid reservoir and it was no problem.i also made this hi-tek diagrm to help me along the way
merlin390
thats your mass air meter, just loosen the band that holds pipe going to your turbo (if equiped) or if its a NA to the throttle body.on your diagram..I am glad you did that. I watched a tech in the shop one day go around and around because he followed the numbers on the distributer cap of a 1987 bronco II well the numbers were mislabled and he was going in circles. got a good laugh out of that one. AnthonyR
You could just do like I did and completely remove the stock airbox I just have a huge cavity behind my battery besides I never experimented trying to get the airbox and it's mounting stuff and if it was different between manual and auto. Guest DougK
i also made this hi-tek diagrm to help me along the way←Thats a good idea actually! But I think the caps are actually number as well.
merlin390
keep working on your car...when you get to some things that are a bit more of a pain you will notice how easy some or the basic stuff is←like replaceing the rear main seal, replacing the tensioner pulley (like it would kill the engineer to give you an aditional 1/2" to work ) oh yeah and who could forget our favorite the evaporator core repair :D
bottlecap
last time i changed the cap and wires i found it pretty hard to mix everything up... it's not like you can mix up the wires, they won't reach unless you put them in the right place.i guess the cap is a little harder, but if you just put the new one on the way the old one was and you're all set as for getting in there... volvo made it pretty easy. take a look at some of the other makes out there... i wouldn't wanna be trying to get at those caps. -mike
burchs1
The more you work on your car the easier it will become. I replaced all my hoses before I did the plugs/wires/cap/rotor recently. Like was previously said...key thing to the distributor cap replacement is to remove the airbox, which is relatively easy to do, once you disconnect the pipe with the air mass meter it's easy to remove. Replacing all the intercooler hoses and vac hoses is much more of a pain.
AnthonyR
Yeah, I used to think things like changing cap rotor were mildly annoying/difficult (mind you this was like 4 years ago) and then ever since this manual swap, everything else is cake.
