Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement 00-s80

In doing the 105K Timing belt service I decided to also replace the Water Pump however, after removing the 7 bolts that hold the pump in place and loosening it from the cavity I cannot figure out how to physically remove the pump from the car. The Alldata directions just state to remove the pump, however, regardless of the direction I move the pump to try and remove it I run into interference.

I followed the directions found in Alldata for replacing the timing belt on the S80, and it went pretty much as expected and I successfully removed the old one. Then I moved on to the directions Alldata had for removing the Water Pump which consists of removing 7 bolts that attach it to the block and then tapping it loose from the block and removing it. That is when I ran into trouble and there is not enough clearance to physically remove it, at least not any way that I could find. I spent a good couple of hours last night and again this morning trying to find a way to get it out without any success. At this point I'm stumped and the directions are no help. This is the first time that I have used Alldata (based on comments I read that said how good it was), I found that the pictures/graphics included were not very good.

If anyone knows the secret I would be happy to learn it.

I figured out the solution to my problem and successfully removed the water pump and installed the new one. The new belt is in place and I just have to adjust it and reassemble.

The solution was to remove the thermostat housing which is mounted in the center directly underneath the cam shafts. Once the housing was removed there was enough clearance to remove the pump. I took a digital picture and stopped at the dealer this afternoon and spoke with a mechanic about the problem I was having. He explained what the housing was and I picked up a new gasket for reassembly purposes and it worked out fine. He also indicated that they never change the water pump unless it is leaking, however, I didn't want to trust it to last another 105K and for the $140.00 that the pump cost felt it was cheap insurance.

The directions is Alldata don't mention anything about removing the center nut and the crankshaft pulley when doing the timing belt, however, the volvo mechanic said that is how they do it. (Real easy when you have an impact wrench). If I was to do it again I would purchase the counterhold tool and remove the crankshaft pulley like the other cars I've done in the past.
