I'm a cyclist, and I ride old school :P I used to do centuries in high school, I think I'm going to start training for that again. My rig is an old Teledyne Titan with full Record gruppo ... sadly they're the same age >_< It's still very much a fun bike, though. (Only reason I still use it is because I don't want to drop the $$ for what that stuff would cost on a new bike.. but my dad used to race it before me, so it's also kinda neat for that reason).

Someone want to humor me?

What is Cat 1/2/3/4?

I got some Cat5 cable in my trunk... is that it?

Next time I see Ken I'm gonna bug him about bikes.

It goes Cat 5 to Cat 1. Think of it as moving up in leagues. :)

You start out in Cat 5. There are requirements for moving up to each category. Cat 1 and 2 is like semi pro. You have a lot more sponsorship so you get your bikes and equipment cheaper, etc.

I don't race, except for some club time trials.

i'm awful, but i have been in love with bikes since i was in 7th grade (i would hide colorado cyclist catalogues in my textbooks and make up dream bikes during classes).

right now, i've got a decent entry-level full suspension bike.

2002 GT i-drive 4.0

i-DRIVE40(Intl)-Wht_Bl.jpg

deore components, Judy C front, FOX Vanilla rear. definitley lower end, but it works for now. maybe when i graduate i'll upgrade to an xt rear, and a duke front fork, or even a new bike. the thing is a beast, but i love the concept of the i-drive, even if it is outdated by four bar.

oh, and i put odyssey black widow pedals on so i can stomp around campus and so that barefoot theives wont want to take my bike  .

these tear up your shins in a heartbeat...

From what I remeber, and it's been a while since I was inthe racing scene (about 2002 or so) to go from:

5 to 4: 10 races experience is automatic upgrade to 4

4 to 3: i thknk it was 15 points wirhin any 12 month period of time

3to 2: 30 points within a 12 month period with top 10 placing in certain upper category races attended.

2 to 1: 30 or 35 points and top 10 placings in specific races throughout. downgradeable if points are notmaintained within 12 month period

1: underpayed, underweight, underfed racer looking to ride in Europe <_< unless you're lucky or a beast ont he bike

5 to 4 is 10 mass starts, i.e. you have to start and ride out with the big group.

UPDATE:::

I know have my dad's '89 Trek 330 woot

lugged steel frame, baby. ive really wanted to start dabbling some in road riding, and now i've got a chance. definitley not anything fancy, even when it came out, but it's decent and in really good shape.

best of all, it's free

by the way, the chainring is slightly eliptical...what is the purpose for this? it is a shimano exage, and it says its "biopace" i have a feeling that has something to do with the shape, but i'm not sure. any help?

It's a secret Japanese plot to get back at us for WWII by destroying our legs.

It's supposed to mimic a natural stride, but in reality it just beats up your knees.

I ride an unknown late 80's frame of Italian origin, with an 8-spd Dura-ace drivetrain, ultegra brakes, and open pro's. Never raced, but done a few training sessions with local guys around here, and gotten royally rocked. :D
