S40 Wont Start

So my friend calls me and tells me his 2002 (i think) S40R wont start. I drive out to pick him up and tell him to start it with the hood up to see if i could spot the problem. Well, when he starts it the engine makes a quick series of clicks ( about 10-15 in 2-3 secs). My best guess is that it is the starter but im totally unsure and just guessing. Anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks!

Jeez, how long have you been waiting to spit up that image

Nope, it just keeps clicking.

S40 1.9T. i thought it was an R

actually it took me 10 seconds to find it.. i've never seen it before. pretty funny tho..

the only R models EVER are 850R, S70R, V70R, and S60R.

and that's strange.. pretty new car to lose a starter..

What you describe, the rapid clicking is what happens when the battery is dead.

Certainly get in there with a voltmeter and check the battery. Be sure to disconnect your terminals and clean them with a wire brush, and reconnect.

If the battery reads low, then try jump-starting the car. Assuming the car starts, do a voltmeter test on the battery, this time with the car running. If the voltage is still low, your alternator is toast.

If you still get ticking and your voltage is up, then it's your starter.

Note, even if the battery "looks" clean, always pull the terminals and clean them with a wire brush. If that car is an '02, yep, it's probably due for a new battery.

Has the car been struggling to start for a while or is this all of a sudden? Mine started by just struggling to get going, then to the point we'd have to jump start.

When it got to the stage of it making that clicking noise, jumped it, drove it to the nearest battery centre, they tested it & it was definitely the battery (which was due to be replaced anyway seeing as it was then about 6yrs old)
