Scott_n_DC
Need to replace the left rear side marker light on my 2000 V40. After many attempts to open the lamp assembly, it appears that there's no way to get at the bulb, and that the whole assembly will have to be replaced. Maybe that's why the owner's manual doesn't list a replacement bulb for the side marker lights? It also looks like the only way to reach the plug is to remove the wheel well covering behind the tire. Can this really be true? Is it Mitsubishi's fault?
Bay13
The parts catalog shows that there is a bulb that can be replaced. If you take the assembly out of the bumper and then twist the connector where it's attached to the lens, I think it will come off.
Scott_n_DC
There doesn't appear to be anything that can be "twisted". The wires disappear under a formed piece of plastic that I chipped away at for a few moments but couldn't remove. I would love to be able to just replace the bulb, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get at it. There is no visible socket or connector on or inside the lamp assembly. I keep thinking that the colored lens might snap off and give access, but I haven't been able to do that either.
Bay13
You could be right, it might be hard wired. I've only replaced the cause they were busted and the new one came whole so I never tried to figure out how to change the bulb. I'll have to check it out new time I have one in the stall.PS I wouldn't chase down the connector, pull the wire out, cut and solder. :)

swmdal
I just confirmed with a Volvo dealer service tech that on the 2000 V40 (the wagon), at least, the entire side marker light assembly has to be replaced when the bulb goes. There's no way to remove the colored lens, nor to get at the bulb from behind, without destroying the assembly. He had just looked at an S40 (sedan) and saw that the lens cover and the bulb in that model ARE removable by themselves as anyone would expect them to be. Why in the world Volvo/Mitsubishi would use a different, half-assed design in the wagon version is beyond me. Anyway, the new assembly is on order.
