I wanted to send a laptop to my father who is visiting Canada these days. I was wonering if there are any import duties to Canada? I dont want him to pay for anything.

I am pretty sure there are, I have no idea how much though.

You bet there is... I can't seem to find the lookup table for the exact percent, but I can tell you how it works.

If you use USPS then the package will be withheld at the nearest post office to the destination until payment has been made.

If you send using FedEX or UPS, then the package will be delivered to the door directly, and the recipient will receive a bill in the mail due and payable to the company that sent it.

I would avoid sending through FedEX or UPS, the fees are much more than with regular post. I paid almost $60 for a ~$300 USD Item. I am guessing that if the item is a gift, the duty will be less or possibly non-existent with standard post.

yea, Canada has HUGE import taxes. The tax they have is the GST (get screwed twice) tax and its pretty high from what i remember. I made the mistake of not sending the item as a gift and the guy i sent my radio to had to pay like 30 bucks to get it from customs. I think you can also send it as a sample or something like that and youll be ok.

Thankyou all!

I think what I am going to do is take it out of its box and send is a gift. I am also going to declare a value of zero on the cusom declaration form.

be careful with this. when we ship packages with a declared value of $0 or $1, they will get held up in customs and UPS or FedEX will call and ask for the actual value. i would just put the correct value, of if you are going to lie, but something like $10 or $20. just make sure you send it as a gift and you shouldn't have to worry about it.
