Might Be Getting A New Volvo

Carmax appears to be working with me in lieu of swapping out my 95 850T for something else, being that it's been in the shop for longer than i've driven it in 38 days of ownership. I'm looking at a (1st choice)99 S80 T-6 with 80k, but at edmunds.com the consumer ratings are not at all flattering. Not one single positive experience in terms of reliability! (2nd choice)The other car is a 2000 V70 AWD R wagon 83k. 3rd choice is a 2000 Passat VR6 AWD wagon, but i really have loved the Volvo driving experience(suspension notwithstanding). what to do...

IMO all three will require you to have deep pockets and long arms to cover maintenance and repairs. Generally speaking, non turbo and/or non AWD cars have much lower owner costs.

...but what fun is that....i want to drive, not be driven...

Carmax actually said they would buy the 850 back for what i paid for it! I honestly didnt think they'd go for it. The 2000 V70 R AWD Wagon to replace it is on it's way from Charleston now.....and with a full warranty up to 116k!!

IF THE 99 S-80 WAS FREE, I WOULD NOT TAKE IT. IT'S A LEMON FROM THE START.

I concur.

How about a 1998 V70 Turbo? You won't have to deal with the faulty ECM. It's very fun to drive and extremely reliable, too. ABS module *might* be a problem, but I guess that's unavoidable.

Good Luck!

You guys are being a little knee-jerk about telling him to go for the 00' R just because it has a 19T [that pushes only 12 psi]

Have a very deep inspection of the AWD system done before you even think about getting it. If you don't, and something is wrong with the AWD [viscous couping, angle gear, etc] you will be footing over very costly repair bills to fix issues with it. Also, get all the maitenence records and check them for any repairs to the AWD.

Check if the ETM [electronic throttle module] has been replaced, if it has'nt it's basically a ticking time bomb waiting to explode with a $1000 or so repair bill. If it's been replaced, that is good.

Just basically check and make sure it has been super well maintained. I got my R over a year ago with zero maitenence records and I am just now getting done fixing all the issues it's had.

but patty... :P

12 PSI on a 19T is a helluva lot more air than 15 PSI on a 16T...

we all know that the 1998 S/V/C 70 5 speed is the best car that volvo ever made...

Thank you for the pointers!

Are these items that would normally be replaced by an extended warranty? Getting Carmax warranty for $2k, which will cover up to 116k.
