2000 V70 Awd Questions And First Impressions

I thought I was getting shipped a 2000 V70 AWD R Wagon, but alas the carmax computers where wrong, and it is no R edition. :( But Darn. She is nice! A whole different car than the 95 850 Turbo i gave back, night and day actually. It's as if Volvo reinvented the wheel in that 5 year span.

First Impressions:

1)Smooth ride, superb suspension, my teeth don't fall out whenever i hit bump in the road, or acidentally run over a penny in the parking lot, unlike in the 850t.

2)Much more low end grunt, doesnt stuggle until the turbo spools, unlike the 850t(which is odd due to the latter's 23hp gain).

3)The interior is trully a work of art. I miss the boost gauge though...

4)Love the wagon space/roof rack

5)WTF is that a wood floor covering the spare tire! neato!

Questions:

1)Is the shifter supposed to be backlit behind the 1,2,3,4,D,N,R,P? If so I have some lights out, if not...i can't see what i am shifting into at night! what the...

2)Why does this car have 23 fewer ponies than the same car 5 years prior?

3)Is my engine a 2.3 or 2.4?

4)Does the AWD system need special TLC?

5)Is that a 6 disk in-dash cd changer....

Items getting repaired Monday:

1)backlighting dead behind comp(same as in 850!!)

2)neither power outlet providing power

3)heating in both seats does not work

oh yeah almost forgot....Carmax is the shizzle!!!

1) Yes, the shifter is supposed to be backlit.

2) You have an LPT, which is a small turbo which provides more power down low and less power up high. The HPT's figures are drawn mainly from the higher end of the rpm range.

3) Should be a 2.4L for the LPT.

4) I don't know, but i'm guessing you should check the level of the bevel and angle gear?

5) Should be a 3-disc if you have an SC-901.

drove the car 200 miles today and i absolutely love her. The CD player though...everytime I hit the changer button the display reads "EEEE". It will accept 1 CD and play it without incident. any ideas?

I don't mean to be a downer but you might want to take advantage of Carmax's 5 day return policy. Check through Volvo's dealer supply of certified used cars through their website. You'll find the prices to be comparable to Carmax, the cars are in better shape, and they are covered by the balance of Volvo's 6 year 100k miles policy vs. Carmax's 30 day crapshoot. Carmax mechanics are also among the worst rated mechanics that you will find (dabblers in all cars, masters in none).

I say this because I just went through the same process. Picked up a pretty sweet '01 V70 T5. Drove it for a few days and there was some looseness in the suspension and odds and ends about the car that put me on edge. Spent a day driving to a bunch of Volvo dealers and test driving their used cars and came away with the definite impression that their cars were in much better shape. Took the T5 back and for the same price picked up a XC from the same year that had 10k less miles on it, was spotless, and has 18 months of warrantee coverage on it.

I don't think, the 6 disc was around for the XC in 2000. so you would have a singel disc.  I would guess the model of your radio is an SC816.

What you say does make sense. But I just couldnt do it for the simple fact that carmax has been so amazingly accomodating during this entire process. They bought back 100% of the 850 I first had, even though i was 43 days into owning, and they then transferred at no additional cost the V70 from out of state. I am smitten with my carmax experience, and any problems I do incur will be covered up to 116k mi. The Volvo dealer wouldnt go above 100k.

too bad you didn't get the R

but AWD is fun

if you have just the indash player, sounds like you don't have a 6 disc changer (unless you actually see it)

if you do have one, and you're getting the EEEE, that means the cable in the back is probably lose. take out the radio and plug it back in

and the turbo "feels" faster than the 850 because you get the max torque a lot lower in the rpm range, so you're faster off the line. when it comes to highway, the HPT models are faster

do a 16T swap and ecu upgrade with dual exhaust and you'll have one fine car

how much $$$ are we talking about here?

Boy, that is pretty accomodating, and as you point out if you are flirting with 100k then there is no advantage to going with a certified dealer car in terms of coverage.

In terms of not getting the R, if the current trend keeps up your wallet is going to be thanking you. :) Best of luck with the car.

hmm

16T is maybe 300-400

get the ST chip for 250

dual exhaust around 600-800?

Dual exhaust on a 2000 V70 might be a challenge considering the fact that there is no cutout on the right side of the rear bumper on a V70 (unless it was modified at some time with an XC or R bumper).

:(
