Brake Failure On 02 C70

Hey folks,

I have a bit of a problem that the dealer can't find, it is stopping problems with my 02 C70. With just normal driving from time to time on stopping the brakes just don't seem to work as well. I've taken it to the dealer and of course there are no codes for the braking system which means all is well right?? Not.

Well this finally caused a problem for my wife who drives an 04 XC70, on a sunny day she took my C70 with the top down, three cars in front of her wrecked and when she hit the brakes the car just did not stop anywhere near as well as her cross country.

$7000.00 worth of damage later the dealer again claims there is nothing wrong with the brakes. Funny that the brakes worked great on part of the drive home then at one stop sign seemed to fade again. Nothing wrong !? <_< Frankly that's crap, it's been in several times for the problem they just can't find it, that does not mean the problem is not there.

Can anyone help out? I love the car other than this problem but I will not keep it if it's unsafe. Where's my Volvo safety??

I have been the proud owner of a dozen Volvos in the last 26 years and currently own:

2002 C70 ragtop

2004 XC70

Restored 1969 142s (Our baby)

Thanks much folks

An old Indian chief once described his own inner struggles in this manner.

"Inside of me there are two dogs.

One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is gentle and good.

The mean dog fights with the good dog all the time."

When asked which dog wins, he reflected a moment and replied, "the one I feed the most."

And ALWAYS remember:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Sounds like your problem isn't Volvo safety, that must be the mean and evil dog wanting food. :P

You want your braking problem fixed. Has anything besides checking for codes been done. Have the brakes been flushed? Has the shop drove the car enough to cause the problem to happen? I'd start with a brake flush, then I'd want to drive it as long as it takes to ensure that a brake flush fixed the problem. How long do you have to drive the car to make this happen? I'd want to drive it at least that long, maybe 2X. If the brake flush didn't correct the problem, I'd suspect the master cylinder.

i cant compete with mr fix it "bay13". I would assume its not as simple as the break flush, but master cyc could be it but ill throw something out that maybe im am completely wrong about. But the abs system isnt functioning properly/tracs, a module possibly. Yet the problem with that idea is that i would assume there would be codes. Little air in the line?

The master tech took the car out a couple of times trying to repro the problem, sez he tried nailing the brake more than a few times but could not repro the issue, when he called the Volvo tech line they didn't have a clue since no code fired.

I picked it up at the body shop, drove home stopping 10-12 times and as I'm slowly rolling up on a stop sign the problem repro's and the pedal gets hard like the vacuum booster starts to fail. I give it more pressure (I do 600lb leg lifts) and the car is not stopping as it should.

I would have thought with bad fluid or air in the line it would happen most of the time, but then again I'm no master tech just a backyard mechanic.

I’ll have the Master tech that works on my car look into the things you guys brought up.

Thanks very much for the suggestions

Ed

its prob one of these: air in the lines "or bubble in line, yet that doesnt make much sense, the bubble part", master cycl/ not enough pressure or isnt consistant. also you could have a prob with just one of the lines meaning the car is compensating via the computer for the one side that isnt braking properly to keep the car from going side ways "so one brake works and it starts to work but the dstc realized a prob and pulsates the brake and, actually i have no idea what im talking about". The last part would make sense hypoth. yet i would assume it would pull to one side if it was one of the front brakes.
