1999 S80 T6 Help Please?

Hello, people. I am actually new to these forums and have been floating around as a non registered. I've noticed that there are quite a few people in here with great knowledge when it comes to problems so i hope somone can help me with my concern.

I purchased a used 1999 s80 t6. It's been running perfectly fine until this morning. I turned on the car and noticed that there was a coolant warning. But went away after a little while. While driving to work i noticed rattling/crackling noises from front of the car (possibly the engine bay?) then after i hit a bump i noticed a sound that sorta sounded like a thin piece of metal snapping or popping.

After that, everytime I went over a bump or uneven piece of pavement i'd here some sort of rattling. because I was going to work I couldn't do anything until afterwards.

Now then, after work I noticed the coolant light was on again so i topped it off with some water so that I could atleast get home. Now then, on my way home i hear *whirring* sound as i gas forward. This only happens when I'm in gear actually. Can somone please help me? Very much appreciated. This has me a little worried considering it's the first car I've ever purchased.

I'd just like to thank you people in advance. :) :(

hmmm the metal sound over a bump sounds like a sway bar is loose. the coolant problem is most likely a leak, check your driveway after you park the car then find the leak. you sure the "whirring" sound wasnt the turbos?

thanks for the quick response. Now then as for the sway bar i think you may be right because I did check it and it was kinda loose.

As for the coolant that's a grey area because I never seen any stains from leak before and was perfectly fine before because I've had an oilchange recently and it was still topped... (been at full level for 2 months)

as for the turbos i think it may be from the turbos, but the sound was never there before or i didn't notice it from before. Could the crack have been from a turbo bearing cracking which is why there's a whirring sound?

well i had a huge coolant leak and no spots on the driveway becuase the leak was above some other stuff that caught and held the coolant from hitting the ground so just turn the car on, drive it till it gets warm then put it in park and open the hood while its on and see if you can see steam (or you could get the tool that puts pressure on the system to find the leak). My mom's s80 had a sway bar loose and it sounded like the whole front end was done for when she hit a bump so id start with that. the wizzing noise is probably the turbos unless your alternator is going. and for your crack sound i am not sure. you are boosting right? cuase if not an intercooler pipe might have busted off.

Well, i noticed that when i come to a stop, lights dim a bit sometimes and light up again, sometimes when i gas forwards too. So it may be the alternator.

The s80 T6 is "boosted" if you mean it's turbocharged. But I didn't do anything aftermarket if that's what you're wondering.

I hope it's nothing serious though... I don't have alot of money to spend... Bad choice of a first car?

*I'll check the coolant tomorrow morning.

thanks for your help anyways.

Since i'm here i have one more question. I noticed the engine bay gets VERY hot. Like when you stand beside the car you can feel the heat. Is that normal for an s80 t6

when i say boosted i mean it has turbos. If i were you i would sell that 99 tomorrow. those cars have horrible reliability ratings. Do a google search and youll find thousands of people who have had problems with them, especially the electronics. There is a HUGE design flaw in the FIAT throttle body in those cars and they literally wear out in 10K miles. If your lights dim i would bet its the alternator. They whine loud when they are going downhill. and yes the s80's get really really hot, volvo just did a recall on the fans by the way, they sent a technition out to the house to replace them.

one more post adn im at 1000!

what about struts? I've had a loud popping noise coming from my front as well, and am taking it in today. by the way, ive had my tranny replaced, power steering pump +resvoir replaced, had oil leaks when I purchased it, recall on the fans, and now am taking it in because of the struts. HAVE TO SAY, ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE VOLVOS ever made. <--sigh

the 01 is a later car ryan, and for the record, I wont purchase a p2 volvo probably ever again. I talked to a service advisor from volvo, and he told me basically all the p2 cars are the same, and are run by many many more computers than 850's or even s70s had.

so, less computers, more gagits, etc etc, = more of a headache later down the road.

I wouldn't mine buying an 850 or s70 down the road to have as a project though. Ever since ford bought volvo, i dont think things will ever be the same for them... If the things that have happened to my car happened on basically a low mileage, well taken care of car, then it can happen to any of the new p2 vehicles. In with the old, out with the new. :(

exactly, a well kept 200 or 700 series is more reliable then the new p2 cars.
