CAN I GET A WITNESS? Real life kick review from someone who bought kicks from bing!

If there is any doubt in your mind about these kickpanels, read on:

Volfan got this PM from VS member "veneficus" regarding kicks, today.

"What can I say about kicks. I've had everything in my doors from stock speakers to cheaper aftermarkets to higher priced aftermarkets and nothing - I repeat nothing is a perfect sounding as bing's kicks. I'm not just saying this as a friend of his this is comming from me as and audiphyle. I own multiple pairs of good headphones and I think that kicks (my setup is a big more advanced than his simple setup - special UR DS1 tweets / limited production crystal mobile sound mids) but it honestly when you get in my car sounds like you have put on a nice high quality pair of headphones. The channels instead of bouncing off of the other doors like they normally do are focused clearly towards the listener and both sides of the car are in perfect proportions. I would never hesitate to buy a pair of kicks from him. You might be thinking that you'd be better off just getting high quality 5.25" speakers for the doors with tweeters but nothing will correct the balance in the car like kicks will, just go for kicks."

lol i should sign you on as a rep hehe...

one thing i want to make sure that people understand, and any installer who has built kicks can atest to this...this is NOT by any means a walk in the park, i dont just pop in some mold, walk away, come back a bit later, and carpet it, its a pretty long drawn out process:

1. bend sides ways into car, tape the entire floor area, and then apply mold release

2. bend side ways into car a lot more, lay down fiberglass, layer after layer to build a floor mold

3. take out hte mold after waiting for it to dry, and carefully mark out where i want the edges to be and then cut uot the shape with a saw, and then thorougly clean it to get rid of any grease

4. cut a baffle for the sepaker out of wood

5. duck back int he car, spoend a good long time on each side aiming the baffle

6. secure baffle to the mold with wood strips

7. pull mold cloth over the whole shape, apply one layer of resin

8. when tahts dry, apply second layer of glass and duraglass

9. when thats dry, sand it down to be relatively smooth

10. dampen the inside of the kick wtih strips of dampenig

11. cut holes in the back of the mold to vent and pass wires though

12. carpet, and pop in speaker

thats a pretty much simplified version of it...if i startred at 10am, i will be lucky to finish a pair by 7pm, usually i have other things going on so it takes me two to three days..so...just to give an idea of how involved it is, and i have to do this pretty much with every kick i build...compared that with what else i can accomplish in one day, and the profit versus time goes way down :)

three problems with that:

1. quality wont be there, injection molded plastic is not strong enoguh, you end up wtih Qlogic kicks, whcih are flimsy, rattle, and open ended.

2. you basiclaly can only fit one type of speaker aimed at one direction. When in reality, different spekares should be aimed a little different.

3. most of these manufacturing firms require an upfront cost for something liek in the tens of thousands of dollars hehe
