Spring Seat Replacement Procedure

Was wondering how complicated this job is for DIY and what special tools are necessary (spring compressor?) Here is a diagram for 850, is 01 V70 T5 similar?

The NW Crew maintanace crew has done like 6 of these in the past 4 months. :) The newest car we have done it on is a 2000, and I can't see the 2001 being that much different. I can talk to Kevin and see if we can get the crew together to do this on your car. We charge beer and pizza. :)

It isn't really a complicated job. Yes, you do need strut compressors, but that is the only special tool needed.

we're getting waaaay to familiar with this install.

have you noticed anything wrong with them, or is this PM?

Replaced the right front spring seat at an indy about 10k ago. They noted the left front showing cracks as well. Starting to hear some sounds around left front but still very infrequent. A couple of times it sounded like something flew up and hit the underside of the car while braking near to a stop.

But no where as bad as the right front was yet. The right front reliably produced a metalic clunk over every speed bump.

It could be something else also. But I only have random and infrequent reproducibility now. So maybe reasonable to fix the known cracking left front spring seat.

Any recommendations on spring compressor tool? IPD sells this one for $68: http://ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?Categor...&RootID=629.

It looks good enough; some folks have differentiated between outside style, inside style, and some strap type (that I'm not familiar with).

Ideally what I purchase for use on my '01 V70 I can use on my '03 VW GTI too. :D

Thanks in advance...

looks like the same one I use. You can also pick that up from a local Sears store. Might be cheaper. Pretty sure mine was under $60 the last time I bought a set.

Thanks for the tip, Zappo. From the pictures, it looks like the same tool is available from Sears (search Sears.com for item 00947057000) for $49.99, and in my case, is shown as in-stock at one of the local Sears stores. I can't be sure it's the same thing, but if you've been using a tool from Sears, by guess is this is it.

I like IPD, but why not patronize the local brick-and-mortar store when the same thing is available at a lower cost. B)

All the same ..just like the ole 850's ..strut bolts are a diffrent size and the P2's have the plastic trim covers on top to remove but the procedure is basically the same.
