V Tuning 850
Ok so I was driving home today, and I had the window down. I noticed a sound coming from the wheel/tire/brake area.Do our cars have those brake whistlers, that tell us when they are going bad?I was driving at about 65-75 MPH.Even when I was driving at like 25-35 it was doing it.And I really only heard it when turning the wheel. Guest Guest
Anyone?I hope it isn't anything seriousDoes it only happen when you apply the brakes? The "whistlers" you refer to are brake pad specific, so it would depend on the type of pads you have installed. However, I don't recall any squealers on Volvo pads I have seen.regards,MAJ
V Tuning 850
To be honest with you, I forget if I was breaking when turning the wheel or not.I think on the highway I wasn't braking. But when I got into town I might have been since I was coming up to a light.I am carless for a few days so I wont be able to test it out until I have my ECU back. Bay13
I've noticed lots of 850 have a noise, especially like when you are close to a wall, when going through a drive through. My car has a noise, but I can't hear it unless there is a wall for the noise to bounce off. You Might make sure that the splash gaurd or rotor backing plate isn't rubbing the rotor, thats also a common item.
V Tuning 850
When I get my ECU back, I am going to take the car for a ride to test the ECU's new chip. But mostly for finding this weird sound.
Kibim
Have your wheel bearings checked. Problem with bearings is they don't often make the same noise.
V Tuning 850
Ok it keeps doing it.It seems to be doing it when I am turning left, and not so much or at all when turning right.I will go back out tomorrow and do another test. Also could it be a worn or busted CV Joint? Worn or busted CV joints usually make clicking sounds, and they dont' often sound like grinding.
nervegrind3r
Worn or busted CV joints usually make clicking sounds, and they dont' often sound like grinding.I have the same issue on my 02 s60, where epsecially on the highway, I hear a sound in the front of the car, kind of like a metallic humming. I hear it mostly if my wheel is slightly turned right, and it stops if my wheel is turned left or I apply the brakes. Volvo dealer couldnt duplicate it when I took it in for service. I also notice it if I go in reverse after I start the car up if its really humid outside (like after it rains). I had similar issues on my mercury sable and no one could give a definitive answer to me.

I never experienced noises only noticed once one of the rear road very hot when when I drove my car. I had to change disks and pads Best regards
BCo
Yeah, sounds like either a backing plate or an e-brake cable that is a little stuck. Used to happen frequently on my V70 and 740 when I was out East.

BCo
Never thought of the E-brake.Yeah, if what you hear is a little sound like "scritch, scritch, scritch, scritch" that varies with speed, and it isn't the backing plate, that would be my guess. I just reread your earlier post, though, and you said you hear it more when you turn L but not right...how about going straight? If you only hear it when you are turning, I'm guessing it might be something else. Wheel bearing maybe.
V Tuning 850
Well I found that since it was getting colder my tires were pretty low. Which I know is normal in cold weather. So I filled them up with air to spec. Now the sound isn't there, or less there of.I haven't heard it since I filled my tired up with air.
