S60 Surround Sound!

Pretty much all new luxury cars have amazing sound systems. I am truly impressed by what they are doing. I am sure that some higher end aftermarket systems beat these stock ones, but if it involves replacing the deck for an aftermarket one that looks odd, I'm not for it. Adding better audio processors and amps and speakers though, I have nothing against that.

Our S60 doesn't have the Dolby Surround System but it does have 13 speakers which pack a nice punch. Definitely a good setup.

Erm i think 9 speaker option is standard in UK, 13 speaker Dolby system is an optional extra, unsure of actual costing!

I have just bought 2002 S60 D5 with SE trim and am confused as to whether I have the "Standard" 9 speaker sound system or an optional "Premium" 13 speaker system.

When I do a count of the speakers I get 11 (not 9 or 13!) as follows:

1 x centre speaker;

3 x speakers in each front door (total = 6);

1 x speaker in each rear door (total = 2);

2 x speakers on rear parcel shelf.

Grand Total = 11

I am wondering if the rear parcel shelf speakers are a separate woofer and tweeter, in which case I then get a total of 13 speakers and have the Premium system (yipppeee)

I have looked closely at the rear parcel shelf speaker cone (can see it from the boot) and they appear to be black Kevlar or similar and not standard paper cone, if that gives any hint of what I have.

Is my system "standard" or "premium" ?

If you get the "Premium Sound System" (13-speakers) and later decide to replace it with an aftermarket headunit (for instance, one that plays mp3) then it will be much harder to remove the premium system and install the aftermarket. With the regular (11-speaker setup) it will be noticeably easier to install a new HU afterwards. It all depends on what you plan to do, what you need, and the price difference. Hope this helps. :D

There should be 3 speakers on your dashboard, 2 long thin ones and the centre sub. Check your handbook.

I'm pretty sure those long thin slots in the dash are for ventilation and not audio.

Anyway, I think I've figured it out now.

After having a close look and listen to the front door speakers, it appears there are no midrange units actually installed (the small grille to the side of the woofer is there but no sound is coming out of it). So there's only a woofer and tweeter .

That brings the total speaker count down to 9 so it's only "standard" system. Still sounds good enough though.
