Gm Flame

Ok, bit of background:

I grew up in a household (read my Dad's influence) owning nothing but GM vehichles, and my first vehicle was a handed down 1975 Chevy Malibu Classic with a 350 V8. I liked it as a first car, but that was (don't laugh too hard) back in 1987. When it started to fall apart with 130k on the odo, I decided on an '85 VW Golf, which offically marked the end of my short-lived domestic vehicle ownership.

Driving down the road a few days ago, I came apon a Chevy Lumina "LTZ". Ok, I gotta say, WTH is GM working with in their Badging department, :monkey: ? What is "LTZ"? Looks ignorant, sounds ignorant (perhaps so do I, but I don't care, because this is my flame, and I believe the place to do it)

Another example is the new Pontiac G6 V6. Its it just me, or is GM pumping a "dry well"?

Ok, enough. I am done!!

Been a rough last couple of days in many respects.

Tacking on a Z on the end isn't new for GM. I believe the first time was in the mid to late 80s when GM was going to make the Camero GTZ. It was originally suppose to use a turbocharged V6, probably the same one used in the Buick Grand National. I don't believe that ever happened, and not sure if the GTZ model even came out. That is also about the same time they started doing more Z models, in adition to the Z28. They had the Z24, Z34, Z51, etc.

As for the Pontiac, no idea what the G6 means. Their usual naming convention is to use famous race tracks or races. G6 doesn't fit.

According to JD Power GM is the second most reliable make of car behind Toyota.

Well, if you put any value in JD Power and Associates' opinions. I'd wager that most typical GM owners only own their cars for 3-4yrs and then trade their vehicles in on another GM model, blissfully losing their shirt on the deal and taking huge discounts on the rental-lot fodder that GM produces. Rinse, repeat.

M'kay, lets say that they're actually reliable (it could happen). GM's products are still, for the most part, uninspired, antiquated piles.

Hehe. JD Power is skeptical in my book. Anyways, I actually read a good article on this. Buick tends to have one of the higher reliability rating of all the GM makes while other cars built of the same basic platform have much different quality ratings. One speculation is that the demographics for Buick (older folks) don't care as much about small quality concerns (as long as the car moves they're pretty happy) than other folks who tend to buy other brands (BMW and MBZ were mentioned) that's why a brand like Buick, which doesn't make it reputation on quality, trumps brands like BMW and Mercedes in a lot of quality reports.

That said. Growing up my father had many American cars from Chevy, to Oldsmobile, to Ford, to Chrysler. None of them ever had any major problems. None of them ever left us stranded. So I'm still open minded to American cars - just nothing peaks my interest right now.

Thankfully, we don't have the American GM models here. But we do have Saab, Opel and Daewoo. (Oops, I mean Chevrolet) have you looked at the "new" Saab 9-5? http://www.sportbilen.se/index.php?page=bi...200695aero&go=0

It's just plain sad. This car was launched in 97 based on a old Opel Vectra chassis to compete with the 850 / S70 and lost in almost every way, and it has a price tag that goes along with the BMW 5-series. No wonder GM is doing so bad.
