'99 T-6 Cel Crazy And Surge

I have a well maintained '99 s-80 t-6. it has 89,000 miles. the car has just started to intermittantly throw codes every once in a while like.... check engine (emmission needs service), stc service, brakes (stop car asap!). Its crazy! I heard it might be a bad ABS unit! I have had the codes cleared but they come back with no rhyme or reason. But, the car was still driving completely normal! but now...... The check engine light wont go away (i think the code was 42 or 44) and sometimes under accelleration it feels like its running on 1 cylinder. It also idles like crap sometimes... its obv. a computer issue cause when the codes are cleared it drives like a brand new baby!

thanks any help is greatly appreciated! - Justin

my questions i think would be pretty self explanitory...

#1. has anyone with this vehicle experienced the same problems and if so what did they do to correct these issues.

#2. are some of these things normal with volvo's in general? (i know that this car especially is an electrical mess, hence the depreciation)

and for the record.... my car is absolutly stock! not one mod!

thanks again guys.. anyone with any ideas how to correct these things would be great!

You stated that the car throws codes and you were told you MIGHT need an ABS module. Who diagnosed that?

Then you said "The check engine light wont go away (i think the code was 42 or 44) and sometimes under accelleration it feels like its running on 1 cylinder. It also idles like crap sometimes" There is no 42 or 44 code.

Now to your question #1, I think you need to go to a Volvo dealer for an exact diagnosis. Sure it COULD be an ABS module but wouldn't you want to know for sure before outlaying any cash? You may have more than one problem especially in regards to the engine feeling like it is running on one cylinder.

Finally question #2. No these things are not normal in a Volvo. If they were, who would buy/own one? I don't know where many people came up with that statement that these cars are an electrical mess? I think that perhaps many techs were not familiar with the network system in general and still are freaked out by it. I see very, very few of these cars with ANY electrical problems at all. Many manufacturers have had network systems for many years prior to Volvo's introduction of it.

I think he meant s80s of 1999 are an electrical mess, opposed to 850's or s70, which have far less computers and such. I'd have to say he is right. My best suggestion would be to take it to the dealer. Sorry that your s80 is giving you so much grief :( Please update me too, something like this could possibly happen to me in the future as well.

Check out Victor regarding your ABS issue. It can be removed with no harm and driven. You obviously

will not have any abs function.

Next, the ATM needs to be cleaned at least. This may have to be replaced (not cheep) I bought mine through

a guy on this site. Brand new and saved me a few hundred dallors. Will still need the soft ware down load

from Volvo but worth it in performance.

Updating software may help. My tranny shifted a little rudely and the software download evened it out.

My car has well over 100,000 (stock) and I love the car. People that have not found a competent shop will hate

this vehicle. It is a little complicated but once sorted out should run good. I have used two Volvo dealers,

one good - one not so good. The worse part about these cars is the cost of going to the dealer, insanely expensive. This will be good prep for my Porsche. At all cost I do my own repairs but soft ware is not free!
