jross
yeah. no. read the thread. the first post explains two different rod combinations that will work with offset grinding the crank.and, jross, for people who would "go vms" at that point, they might also want to look into a set of forged DSM rods and some Ross pistons....they look like they just might fit....just mabye...Yeah, I don't doubt that the DSM rods & some Ross pistons would work, but it's looking like you'll need to offset grind the crank and bore the cylinders. I dunno if you'd have to adjust deck height or anything to keep the displacement and or compression at that point, but that's another thing you'd have to look at. I just used VMS as an example of a drop-in replacement set. Anyways, I think The Poi mentioned you up displacement some going with Honda goodies... any changes in C/R going on there? Also... I know this is gonna sound silly, but what about bottom end clearances? I mean, will the rods be long enough & etc?

I was under the impression it was a full rotating assembly, though, which was why I brought it up earlier.

BlackT5
rotating assembly comes with the machined crank. if you buy just the pistons & rods, ovbiously you have to have your crank journals machined

BlackT5
well, he USED to have the "rotating assembly" on there.. i dunno.. Terry has all the catagories mixed up with a whole mash of shiit. Although it looks like he is slowly sorting it out?
Guest DougK
I think I remeber it too. Not for me though, no matter how you slice it, its to rich for my blood.

Not for me though, no matter how you slice it, its to rich for my blood.Well, realistically, by the time you price out what it would cost for all those goodies from any other Volvo-specific vendor, and when you include the machine work & etc neccisary for all/most of those things, the VMS is price-competitive. We bitch and moan about the price they extract from us for parts, but in the end, you gotta pay to play. I mean, I never thought I'd be pimpin' VMS but SPM H-beam rods and forged pistons alone is ~ $1700 WITHOUT balancing or shipping costs!

I'm not seeing this project coming in that cheap, sorry. Especially not at the prices I'm getting quoted for rings. (Now that I'm looking at my "costs" spreadsheet, you could bring it in under 2k if you don't balance the engine and don't have any "extra" costs. However, when you account for all the gaskets, rings, bearings and bolts that need to be replaced when you're doing this, you're not under 2k by much, even then.) Gotta compare apples to apples were really thread jacking but even at the worst:Rods 675bearings, rings ~400-500 dollars (freaking ring prices are stupid)bearings, water pump, gaskets, timing belt misc 500Fresh hone = free (do it myself)jetwash= 100 bucks (I like things clean)right around 2k isn't it?Thats really all there is to a "motor". What you want to do from there is a different story (ported head, big turbo, cams ect)
mAydAy
Get some Honda pistons and you can get pistons and rings and wrist pins ready to go for a couple hundred. Plus if I'm doing it, I'd like a bore and power hone just to make sure everything is nice and clean inside. Lighter assemblies are always good.
