Asinine
So, as you may or may not know i wrecked my 850 last week, and have been looking for a replacment since.I found an AWESOME ride at and AWESOME price on Swedespeed (link follows). The car is exactly what i was looking for, with the mods i only dreamed of putting on my '94 deer slayer.I conversed with the seller who seems to be a real stand up, technically savvy Volvo enthusiast and we had everything arranged pending my insurance approval, and clairification on some import costs.I had White850T5 check it out earlier today (Sunday) and had only great things to say about it. I was sold, my dad didn't like the idea fearing additional costs upon importation getting it to Canadian highway standards. Fears which were quelled after i spoke to a friend of mine who also happens to be the head technician at the local stealership. So, i went to bed thinking of how i could convince my dad that it would be a good idea to pick up a car that is essentially DONE by way of modifications for what i thought was less than $2000 more than a used 850 with no cool mods and probably in worse condition than 'the texan' - i.e. NO Canadian winters.Fearing the disapproving glares that would surely follow for the next eternity i couldn't sleep (i know, i know, it's my money i can do what i want.....) so i got on the internet to investigate the costs and find out that this socialist paradise we know as Canada has made personal vehicle importation financially impossible.Purchasing the vehicle in the Lone Star state would be for just the price as listed. No sales tax or anything. Getting it through the boarder the Canadian government charges 7% sales tax, then 6.1% duty since it was not manufactured in the US or Canada. I also need to pay $187 to some registration/inspection agency and $100 to admit a vehicle with A/C into the province. Then I have 10 days to modify the car to meet Canadian highway standards (i assume very little other than bilingual airbag stickers) and have it inspected ($50) as well as an emissions test ($35). Once all the paperwork is in order I take it to a local Canadian Tire (like Pep Boys) and pay another $25 to have it cleard and released for registration in Ontario. Once i hit the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario they slap another cool 8% sales tax on the whole purchase, then i need plates and a new sticker ($20 + $100).For those not following along that results in 21.1% in duties and taxes ALONE, plus the other fees topped 25% of the price of the car. Not to mention the costs associated with flying to TX ($278US with tax) and gas and food on the way home (22 hours plus naps).I feel awful right now. Mostly for letting this fellow down in not purchasing his car. I hate going back on comitments of mine, and secondly because that is such a sweet ride at such an AMAZING price. If i were a US citizen i'd be X-Countrying this second to pick it up, but as a Inter-Country purchase the taxman has differnt plans.Anyhow, i would encourage White850T5 to add his comments to this thread as he drove it today for an endorsment. Here is the link for the car, someone on this site please take it! The Lost TexanMoral of the story is that well.. inter-country purchases are still a long way off for me - like until i have too much money to know what to do with. Currently as a student going $1600 over my budget for the car in debt would not be a prudent decision.I'm buying Ron one of mmetz' t-shirts for giving him the run around. Volvoson
So, are you getting it, or still just considering it?
Asinine
Neither, i am NOT getting it, and am very upset about it!
StickThatClutch
Just transportation fees alone would probably amount to 10% of the purchase cost of the car. That would kill the deal for me.These cars aren't super rare. I don't understand why people go to such far and away places to pick them up. I'm sure there are some locally. Asinine
The trip including food and gas and flight would have been about $400 for budget. The texas car is very desireable because it has mods on it that i intend to do at a cost to me of approximatly $8000CDN which is what i expected to be able to get the car for including taxes duties and transportation. Not to mention the fact it's probably never seen a snow flake increases the lust. I'll find another 850 and in a couple months my dad will be rolling around in my '94.
Zappo
then 6.1% duty since it was not manufactured in the US or Canada.Wouldn't this have been paid already? Ok, it wasn't paid to Canada, but still.

WhiteT5
Hhhhmmm, there are always work-arounds and loopholes in every system it seems. I'm sorry to hear that you're not able to purchase this car though. It truly is in brilliant condition. I spoke w/ the owner (Ron, very nice guy by the way) as we drove the car around and he was certainly very knowledgable about these cars. The thing that really freaked me out is that the interior doesn't have a single squeak or rattle in it (I kid you not). The car has been babied and drives very nicely in every regard. It leaks nothing, has not a single spot of rust, engine pulls strong through the range, and it handles the curves quite adequately. The paint is in superb condition as well. If anyone out there is looking at buying an 850, this is a superb specimen and I'd suggest that you snatch it up before someone else does.

I'm sure there will be something localThat's true, for example last year I found a red '97 850 R 5 Speed, but when I spoke to some guy to check the car for me it had a little bit of rust, it was a rare find but nevertherless it was not worth it, keep looking! :)

Asinine
NAFTA would take care of the duty if it was manufactured in Canada, US or Mexico, but since it was not it is a 'new' import to Canada and subject to that duty.I spoke with a friend of mine who is a customs agent and she agreed that it was subject to duty but might not be charged, that's a $500 risk i couldn't afford to take - among other things.Crapperz

NAFATA would be North American free trade. Either way, you could disassemble the car and crate it ship it to Canadia reassemble it and title it as salvage (use your old vin plates) and you can probably get past the taxes. Lots of work though! Asinine
haha.. disassemble eh..Well, i NEED a car bad. I'm driving a replacment volvo right now.. my dads '89 740 with a giant hole in the front pipe exhaust, a slow leak from one of the tires, no fabric on the headliner, no radio, and 543,000kms.It is a piece of stuff. I told him today that my car will be too cool for him when it's repaired and i should buy a car to replace the 740 and then when we get my '94 back on the road we can swap!?
