Sub And Spare Assembly

Hey folks, i really love the idea of putting the sub where spare tire also goes is awesome for not taking up too much room and giving great sound (i assume at least - if it's good enough for Bing, it's good enough for me).

However, i snowboard and will oabviously put my snowboard and boots and such in the back of my car. How well protected is it from water (i.e. melting snow), is there a way to protect it. Of course any remaining snow on my oard isn't going to result in monsoon-esque water flows, but it is a consideration.

well, get a trunk mat if you dont already have one, i am cursing myself for leaving it in PA cuase i couldnt fit it :(

with my rubber trunk mat, you should see the stuff i threw in my wagon all day: wood, paint, fiberglass, wet buckets, table saw, aircompressor, oil , and yets, even skis and boosts filled with snow after a days runs.

of course, if you completely soaked your back wtih water, meaning took a water hose to it, its gonna get damanged, but i dont think you would be doing that now would you :)

basically, the most sensitive part fot water is amps, the top of a sub cone you can get wet, and as long as you wipe it off in time :)

well thankfully i have said mat - yay!

Now, how hard is this to install. Installing my deck and iPod module was definitly within my capabilities but i don't know about sub and amp!

I work at Best Buy so i can get a great discount on installs there, would their car audio department handle this kind of setup - i.e. amp and sub, or would it be better left for a 'professional shop'?

Or - Bing - make a kit!

i have no comment on best buy installing it..

as for doing it youserlf, umm i guess if you want to do real guettosih, you can just make a box, stff it down there, and bolt the amp on the box and hid it all behind the cover...

if you want to do a set up similar to mine, you would need a bit more tools and experienece...

making a ready to drop in box wouldnt be out of the question, though i dont plan on doing it with any kind of regularity, since not enogh people are intersted in it ;)

but if you want to get one built, just PM me, and i can see what i can do...other wise...;)

something like this: with the right equipment, somneting like this can be made and shipped... :)

jsut drop it in, hook it up, no modifications required ;)

Beautifully executed Jeremy. Is that a free-air design? And is the spare tire still there?

Yes and w1's respond well to free air installations. Power handling is relatively low though at 125w RMS, but enough for me. Everything is still in the spare tire well (spare, jack, tools, carpet cover).

If anything i want to get rid of those stupid roof rails, but it is a good idea - drat.

No matter, i don't want a sub box floating around in the back of the car, i really love the embedded style that bing and Jer. sport.

I don't think i'll take you up on the offer, but what kind of numbers am i looking at for a drop in setup like you've shown!?

how were you able to keep the spare tire in there? my tire well is really packed in there. do you have a full size spare like i do or a donut?

The sub only has about 4 1/2" mounting depth, I had to shift the spare just slightly into position (I can't remember, but it may be upside down). I actually have more room downward to go, since originally I wanted to bottom-mount the sub (i.e. 1 1/2" lower than now), but I chipped the laminate a little on the cut edge despite careful cutting. Before rushing out for a router bit to correct it, i tried top mounting and it worked fine. The cross beam of the flap sits on the front edge of the rubber surround and that pressure actually keeps the baffle board firmly in place and produces better sound.
