Rear Hatch Stuck Closed

Recommended Posts

Wife took the wagon out of town. I've known that I need new hatch struts, but haven't gotten around to it. So when she had the hatch open, it slammed shut on its own. And now the thing is stuck shut. Any suggestions?

When I lock and unlock the car, I can hear/feel the locking mechanism in the tailgate doing something...it sounds like it always does. But when I pull up on the handle, it doesn't "engage"...if you know what I mean. The handle feels like it does when the hatch is locked. I've tried going inside, pulling the inside latch and pushing with all my might, but nothing. I guess I'll take off the panel this weekend.

But has this happened to anyone out there?

You probably tried this but maybe if you unlock the car with the key as well as the remote? I always forget I can open the hatch with the key because it's hidden by the plastic cover.

I had what sounds like the same problem. My symptoms were that if I yanked hard enough the door would come open. Sometimes I would feel the click when I pulled the handle and it would open normally. Sometimes I would drive around a little and when I got to my destination, the door would have rattled loose. The shop said the problem was that the lock linkage needed to be adjusted. Apparently this is something unique to Volvos.

OK, I fixed it. Took the inside panel off, then took off the inside latch. One or both of the two thin metal rods that go into the lock mechanism had apparently come loose when the tailgate slammed. I simply fit them into their proper positions, and everything works fine.

Of course I broke a couple of those stupid clips, so I guess I'll be ordering some of those.....again!
