gaterp
Growing up in the UK I was told the Volvo 5 /850 engine was a lotus product and that also the base for the 850 turbo was all lotus done as well.

gaterp
I’m not Volvo expert but I know the history, and I do know that 850 engine was a lotus product sold to Volvo in 1979. Lotus has been doing turbo techs for the Volvo the whole time. If you call lotus in the UK someone may tell the deal. They were a big OEM for turbo’s in the 80’s. VOLVORacr
Maybe it's a Vdub. They have a 5 cyl too. If it was sold to Volvo in 1979 why did they take so long to put it out. 15 years.
StickThatClutch
I thought the I5 was just a truncated Volvo I6. Nothing magical.

Volvo does nothing short term, until ford got them. Let me ask you question. What do you think Volvo ran in the British racing series in the early 90’s? all NA
gaterp
Since no one what's to answer Volvo ran the 5 n/A non turbo lotus engine, and I do remember the Lotus HD package in the early 90's in the UK on the sales cars, green labels under the turbo. Please show respect for some models you do not know about.
matt1122
The I5 in the 850 was a new modular powerplant, developed with assistance from Porsche's design labs - NOT LOTUS. The modular part covers what Stephen said - all I4, I5 and I6 engines since then have been based on that.Whoever told you Lotus was involved is very wrong. I've never heard that before. gaterp
Lotus was the engine design, Porsche did not have and never had 5 cylinder designs, these are OEM companies and I have family that now work for Ford so I can’t rely all the info. But I know for a fact Porsche and Volvo never had an affialtion.
