I won a 2001 V70 T5 with a manual transmission on ebay. I currently have a 95 855 GLT with a manual trans, she's got 238k on her and I was ready to upgrade. Unfortunately I live in the Atlanta area where all hte other soccer moms don't drive 5 spds do the car is in New York. My father-in-law lives up there and is going to look at it for me on Monday. What should he look for? The car has been carfax certified, and comes with a free 6 month/7500k warranty. My 850 has been so awesome as far as things not breaking that I am not too concerned about not being able to check the car out myself. By the way the car has 48,664 miles on it. If anyone could put up a maintenance link for the T5 I wold appreciate it since I have never owned a turbo vehicle before. If anyone is interested in my 855 it is in great shape still, I live about 45 miles north of Atl, I am also looking for a 3rd seat for T5 in black, got 3 kids gotta have it. Thanks in advance for all your input.

Congrats on your "new" V70 T5, macmom. Ours is a '01 with 70K. Your in the right place to find good info. Check the "pinned" section at top of this forum, "Electronic Throttle Bodies..". The ETM is no doubt the major weakness in the '99-'01 Volvos. Search "ABS" for info on another weak design. Sites like Swedespeed.com and Volvospy are good for info as well. I'm sure other, more knowledgeable folks will chime in here; I've learned a lot about our car from from lurking hereabouts. Enjoy your V70!

Sorry for cross posting but I just shared all my bookmarks somewhere else

http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=48426

I've encountered the following problems besides the regular service items at 90k miles.

- 50k+ upper engine mount rubber cracked

- 70k brake booster hissing

- 70k front crank seal very slight leak

- 70k front spring seats cracked

- 80k cleaned jammed ECC temperature sensor fan

My ETM is yellow sticker (I read this is a replacement) and was there since I got the car used at 90k. There was a recall on cooling fan replacement about 1 year ago.

Good luck.

I agree with the first reply you got.

ETM and ABS are what we have to deal with in 99-01 Volvo's. I also understand that the axle splines can make a noise from where they slide into the wheel bearing portion of the connecing end...(according to Johann, someone correct me if I am wrong))the materials have different rigidities...enough to make the 'click' like t-t-tt-t when engaging gear....but I experienced this in an automatic, so it may be dofferent on a manual...there is a glue/grease one can put on to rid the noise for a long while.

you also have a car that is fast as hell, so just consider these 'minor' ( :P ) items maintenece.

enjoy the wagon, and post some pics....we love pics!!!!

Thanks so much for all the info. Has there been any further action on Volvo's part regarding the EMT? We do all of our own maintenance so hopefully a good cleaning will keep it going for a while, does driving the piss out of it help? We never cleaned the egr on the current car but it gets an Italian tune-up on a regular basis. I can't wait to drive the car since several of you said how fast it is, my dad was a racecar driver so speed is in my blood (first speeding ticket at 16), the 855 NA has a lot of torque with a manual trans so I am sure I will be burning up my tires with a turbo added to the mix. My husband is picking it up next weekend, I'll let you know if we really got a good one or not. Is the audiomax stereo with a subwoofer as nice sounding as I hope it is?

Good luck with the new car. I'm a fellow '01 V70 T5 owner and wow can you expect this car to be fast. I have one with the geartronic transmission so I'll assume that the manual will be tons more fun to drive. Be sure to post pictures on the board when you can

My husband finally got home with the car which was in NY. I didn't get to drive her a lot but I did have to go on some country roads to pick up my daugter and all I can say is Oh YEAH!!!! I didn't get to push it because the roads were damp and the tires aren't really great but I can definitely say she handles way better than the 850 with a good suspension. What a nice car! It is so smooth, the clutch is lighter than the 850 and it doesn't require as much effort shift smoothly. They must have improved the engine mounts as well. What a Hawt ride, I will try to get some pics tomorrow afternoon and post them, if I can figure out how.:D:D:D:D :D
