I've got the Autometer Z-Series. I think the black goes really well with the stock gauges. The bulb condom is almost a perfect color match. It's too dim though. Can a higher wattage bulb be put in there? Or where do you get the LEDs? Radioshack?

defi is not worth it!

You get what you pay for.

I hate Autocrapper gauges. Most of the Autojunker boost gaues I see don't even settle at zero in the resting position. I have also had so many electric gauge senders go bad I stopped counting years ago.

I was tired of trying to save a dollar and get garbage gauges that end up costing me more in the long run. So for this car I decided to try Defi gauges. Let's just say they are very nice.

I would use and trust VDO gauges before Autometer - there is a reason almost all OEMs use VD. I also like Cyberdyne digital gauges. There is no moving parts which is MUCH more reliable compared to Autometer and why they are so cheap. Plus when they are turned off they are stealth. People dog on Cyberdyne, but they are OK in my book. They senders are MEGA cheap. For $60 I was able to buy a temp gauge which came with 1 sender and FOUR additional senders - hook them up to an extra "info" switch I have and I will be able to cycle through 5 different temp readings from ONE gauge. I plan on watching the "not so important" temps like intake air temp, underhood temp, tranny pre-cooler and post-cooler temp, etc. Then the important gauges I have Defi for boost, oil temp, and water temp. Then the knock, EGT, and wideband A/F is handled by the PLX R-500 all on one screen. So I have a total of 5 readings in 1 gauge, 3 readings in another, and 3 extra gauges with dedicated critical info. Then I have my PDA logging the OBD scantool - ignition timing, vehicle speed, fuel trims, etc. I would say that is enough monitoring for one person haha.

I'm gonna disagree with you on this one Greg, :)

the VDO boost gauge that ipd sells in thier pod is a POS... I realize this may not be indicitive of all VDO products, but everyone that I've seen looked to me to be far inferior to Autometer..

What do most (domestic) racing teams use? Autometer.. it can't solely be because they got them for free.

I was just saying I would trust VDO before Autometer. Would I use VDO? No, for me it's now Defi or Cyberdyne, period. I would also use Greddy or Apexi if I ever came across a good deal.

As far as Autometer, it goes way beyond giving free gauges. Autometer PAYS teams to use their gauges, put their stickers on the car, and sing their praises. A LOT of money. If a gauge breaks, Autometer replaces it. What do the race teams care? Autometer could replace them every other race for all they care. But when you are an end consumer spending your hard earned money on a boost gauge that is not even calibrated properly. Well, that is just sad.

If you're on a low budget, and want a decent gauge that will get the job done, get Cyberdyne and you will be perfectly happy. If you want a pay a little more than Autometer, and want very high quality gauges that will outlast your car, get the plain jane analog Defi D-gauges. $100 for a boost gauge is not that bad at all. If you have bling blau dollars to spend like OPM, then get the really expensive fancy Defi gauges - D-link or whatever it's called. The thing that requires the $500 brain and they self darken and all that crap. I think when people think of Defi being ridiculously priced, THAT is the Defi series they are thinking of. Heck, there are some mega expensive Autometer gauges too - check ther site!

haha, hey man, I'm not saying ALL Autometer gauges are junk. A lot of people use their gauges and love them and would marry them if they could. I am just saying that I have run across enough defective and broken Autometer stuff personally that I will never use their stuff again.

exzactly, like most things, the experiences that we have with certain people and products shapes our willingness to do business with said companies and individuals.
