wow. Since the droning seems to be an issue even with the ipd system a custom should be just fine right? I mean if the ipd is that loud... plus i could always just put on double magnaflows, which seems to have worked pretty well for those who have done it. Plus it would be reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaly cheap to do it that way.

In my experience I used a 2-1/2" pipe with three mufflers: one Dynomax Magnaflow(?) with SS packing, midmounted (where the stock muffler goes and two glass packs both 18" long before and by the tailpipe.

Is was loud and it resonated at multiple frequencies. BUT it sounded cool. I just can't drive a race car every day.

The IPD only drones at about 2000 RPM which, unfortunately happend to be about cruising RPM at 65-70 MPH.

The IPD was much quieter all around and is obviously tuned.

The IPD was on sale (and is now) for $500. The custom will run you $300-$400 depending on where you go and what you buy.

What is driving the differing opinions here is each person's preferrences. Mine is performance with quiet over quality of sound and loudness.

Some prefer the quality of the exhaust note and don't care so much about noise in the cabin.

When I was younger I didn't mind it loud since I didn't drive as much and usually just had friends in my car (at the time a built Mustang GT 5.0) But when I started to talk more in the car both on the cell phone and with my passengers (like girls, or coworkers, bosses, etc) I realized that the noise was really annoying now and I liked it better quiet.

All the while I still wanted performance.

Figure what your preferences are and go from there. You have gotten excellent info in this thread.

As for what I have now, 850 Turbo, reverse IC, Speedtuning 17 psi ECU, ATR down pipe with race cat, K&N, AND a STOCK cat-back.

guys, im about to have mine redone, the one i have now is custom. what i have is this. no cat(thats what makes mine loud) theres a 2.5 inch glass pack where the cat should be, then ihave 2.5 inch aluminized pipe custom made all the way to the muffler at the end(stainless steel straight through). it is kinda loud, but not half as bad as most cars with the same set up as mine. im about to get the whole thing taken out and have a whole exhaust custom made from the turbo back(300 bucks using my old muffler/no cat). since my wife doesnt work and i have 2 kids, i cant go spendmoney on my car like i use to, but it will be done before the end of the year.

basically, IMO, custom is the way to go if your on a budget

so yah, i just called a local exhaust shop and he had....shall we say....an interesting opinion? We were talking about it and he seemed to think that if i went on and put on a 3in catback exhaust that the horse power would actualy go DOWN. He said something about the loss of backpressure would rob about 40 horsepower and 60+ ft/lbs of torqe. Um, am i just completely ignorant with cars or does this sound like total b/s to anyone else?

That rule does not apply to turbocharged cars; bigger is better when it comes to cars with turbos.

i even mentioned that but no. Oh and what size engine is stock in the 850s? Just so i dont get thrown crap again for wanting an exhaust system for "an engine to underpowered to benefit"

In that case, go some place else where they know what they're talking about.

I think that is a legitemate concern. I'm not sure but I would imagine it works on the same concept of a cylinder head. A bigger port does not always flow more air/gas. It is important to make sure exhaust gasses achieve a constant directional flow rate and do not become too turbulent as they exit the turbo. This will create back preasure, I'm just not sure at what diameter this starts to happen on our cars.

OK just called ANOTHER exhaust shop and got another odd response. He obviously knew what he was talking about and recognized the exact model of car as soon as i said it, even knew the turbo and exhaust size. the funny thing is that he said that mandrel bending wont help to much until you hit over 500 horsepower. He suggested just bypassing the resonator and putting a high performance muffler on it.

actualy considering what the guy at the second exhaust shop said i might do just that, except just replace the old muffler with a new one. the more i think about it the more what he said makes sense. 2.25" exhaust isnt what i would call "restrictive" espeacialy considering the fact that alot of peoples performance exhausts are still only 2.5". It seems like the resonator and stock muffler would be by far the biggest causes of back pressure. He also suggested maybe changing out some of the spots where the exhaust gets real tight with bigger pipping. Is there some other reason the stock exhaust sucks? I mean if $100, or maybe even less, modification to the stock system that fits perfect will produce close to if not as good results as buying a whole $600+ performance exhaust. Another wierd thing i learned is that there is not a single shop in southern missouri that does mandrel bending according to BOTH exhaust shops. Plus then i could put that money towards a better chip instead of just getting a SpeedTuning chip
