TorqueSteer
Joe ran a 13.88 and 14.0 on stock exaust piping, minus the cat and muffler, with just a magnaflow "Wide Open" muffler in place of the cat. I believe that the stock exaust diameter is fine, if you dont mind the noise of a very free flowing exaust, if you want it silent and catted however, a 3" may be a better option. Guest Red-Flag
Hey I have a 95' VOLVO 850 GLT N/A, I was curious as to any necessary backpressure numbers. A buddy of mind just flat out redid his own exhaust with just a straight pipe back from the cat, no mufflers or anything. (This was a honda though) What kind of custom piping could I put in or have put in cheap that will last?
andrew_the_fox
so yah, i just called a local exhaust shop and he had....shall we say....an interesting opinion? We were talking about it and he seemed to think that if i went on and put on a 3in catback exhaust that the horse power would actualy go DOWN. He said something about the loss of backpressure would rob about 40 horsepower and 60+ ft/lbs of torqe. Um, am i just completely ignorant with cars or does this sound like total b/s to anyone else? That rule does not apply to turbocharged cars; bigger is better when it comes to cars with turbos. What about non turbos? I want to get a custom exhaust as well, and I have a performance muffler that a friend gave me. What I want to do is take out all the old exhaust piping, muffler, etc, and put a straight pipe back from the cat, and the performance muffler where the old one was but with new piping? I want to keep my power, and not make it too too loud. I am so confused with this like backpressure stuff. For the record I also have an 95 850glt N/A. I did a 2.5" CATback on my 95 850 n/a, and it sounded pretty nice, I also had a Magnaflow muffler straight through design. I don't think there was any issues with backpressure in my application. I want to keep my power, and not make it too too loud. I am so confused with this like backpressure stuff. For the record I also have an 95 850glt N/A.The game becomes much more complex with N/A engines and often times requires a good bit of research to find out what works best. Ultimately, what you want is for the system to be able to expel exhaust gases as rapidly as possible (read: high velocity). Now, you might just say that you could hack the exhaust off before the cat and call it a day; not so. Think of it like this: Blowing air through a drinking straw, blowing air through a piece of PCV pipe, and blowing air through one of those coffee stirrer thing-a-majiggers; your lungs are an engine. When you blow through the coffee stirrer, chances are that your face will start to turn red and you still have lots of air in your lungs that needs to be expelled. This means that the system is too restrictive and needs larger piping. Now blow through the PCV pipe and you'll be out of breath in no time at all and gasping for more air. The air won't come out of it very fast either. This is what happens to your engine if you were to cut the exhaust off at the header. Now, with the drinking straw, you can get high velocity, you won't run out of breath instantly, and you won't end up w/ excess air in your lungs. This concludes today's physiology --> automobile analogy. I know there's a lot more to it, so ask google about it or go here. Tune in next week . I was thinkin a 2.5 pipe back from the cat, and then this muffler (see picture) at the end where my exhaust tip is? A friend of mine gave me this muffler for free, and if it can save me some cash on a new exhaust system by including it then I'm down. I am at a little over 90k miles and according to Volvo I am do for an EGR cleaning anyway so what better time to replace my exhaust system?!The one I have looks similar to this muffler, and has a 2.5 inch entrance in the back for the piping from the cat. Would this idea work?

Would this idea work?Is that muffler straight through design? Yes you can have a custom exhaust built by a local shop and should be able to use that muffler. I wouldn't see why not. My 2.5" system cost me around $318.00 total piping and muffler. My muffler was like $175 new, and the piping was like $150 or so maybe a little less. V Tuning 850
Just remember, that you may loose power if you modify the stock exaust.Yeah agreed, that is why I suggested 2.25" first before I stated I had 2.5" on my 95 850 n/a. whatme
you dont want to destroy a nice luxury cars image with a rice pipe like that. Magnaflow all the way....seriously have you seen that video that was on here recently? That sounds rediculously sweet.

whatme
yah i think thats what i have decided to go with....no yanking out stock exhaust though...just bypasing cat and resonator and replacing muffler. That should give it a nice growl and a little extra kick for about $
JHEIII874T5M
if you take out the stock cat, you will throw a code that will limit your boost to 5 PSI if you keep the BCS plugged in.
whatme
hmmmm. Ok so scratch "bypass" and change to "replace with racing cat" and cahnge that cost to $200. :P
