Svenman
I have a question to fellow Volvo-fans:Which aftermarket amplifier would fit in the original amplifier location in a 1997 Volvo 850 beeing the orginial place is under the passenger seat ?I am struggeling to find any information on people who has placed their amp under the passenger seat. If you can help me with info or links I would be very happy. I want to add an amplifier and 2 speakers(hatshelf) to my SC805 stereo, as it already has the 4 doorspeakers and the tweeder. I have found lots of info on hatshelf projects, so that should be an easy on. Info on the amplifier is the only piece missing...ThanksSven

Svenman
read stickies, then post. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=21970Welcome.Yupp - and I did, found that Pic Tutorial Of 850 Sub/amp Install By Anthonyr]might be a thread of interest. Fortunately I found that the link: http://project850.no-ip.org/installguides/.../subinstall.htmI would not know if this would be a link on "how to install aftermarket amplifier under passenger seat" or if it goes through installing an amplifier behind the backseat which is a popular place I have found throughout searching this volvo audio-forum.Are there certain Amplifier brands that would fit better under the passenger seat than others ? I would like to not have to spenda almost 1000 US $ on an amplifier at my local Norwegian Volvodealer who would have to order it anyhow, and who knows if they actually would have it in stock ? the underlørd
wait, you want to put a Stock AMP under the front seat? or an aftermarket one? and why not just put it in the trunk?
Svenman
wait, you want to put a Stock AMP under the front seat? or an aftermarket one? and why not just put it in the trunk?Ok, I would like to get an aftermarket amplifer to put under the seat. for a whole two reasons:1. orginal amplifier(HA 4240) is expensive at dealership. I am sure I could get a cheaper aftermarketamp.2. putting the amplifier under the seat its out of the way. (yes i have read threads where people write they would not put it under the seat because one would be sitting in the backseat kicking the think a part or whatever - well i am fortunate so far that for 95% of my driving there are noone in the backseat to mess it up.) Thats the darn problem! Noone has documented an installation of an amplifier under the passengerseat. Oh well, I will keep looking. I have so far read in a Norwegian Volvo Audioforum that the physical specs of the HA 4240 that its kinda small and recktangle-like shaped with sharp corners. If anyone has more spesific specs on the amp I would like for them to post it so I am not completly blind when I will have to go shopping for an aftermarket amp. Thanks,Sven
crazykn
I was considering the under-seat method, but went with the trunk. Anyways, since you want to do a underseat install. You will need a adapter to get RCA-Preouts from the stock HU (PM if you want me to build a custom one for you ~ $15). Look at the Volvospeed site (not the fourm), under reference for instructions on a DIY). Then route a power cable from the battery through the car, but instead of running to the trunk, cut a hole in the carpet at the B-Piller and string the wire through. You've now got the power cable under the seat. Also tap the Blue/white strip antenna wire at the HU's harness and run a wire w/ the power cable and this wire is your remote amp turn on wire (so when you turn on the HU, the amp will turn on as well). For the RCA cables, this is not going to be like the trunk install at all. You may have to take apart the Center console to get access to the floor carpet to run the RCA audio wires to the amp. The rule is to keep the RCA cables as far away from the power cables as possible. i'm sure someone here could give more detailed questions. Good luck! RWagin
I tried to mount a JL Audio Amp e1200 under the passenger's seat and it would not fit, you need a small amp to work under there.

So yes, I have though of the wiring problems and I have some more electronic-gifted friends than myself that told me wiring would not be a problem, there are basically adapters for about every plug there is - and cabling, I will take you advice and watch that - now, really all i need is an amplifier that would fit under the seat and that would not be a pain in the rear to install under there:) any suggestions ? :)

I though of something similar of what the HA4240 delivers(4x50) - nothing very big. i am not really looking for the stereo that you hear when i am a mile away, if you get where i am going at, just something a little bit bigger that what i have now stock - which is AFAIK 4spkrs with 25W and 8ohms. plus the two tweeders.$$ i am thinking modest, thinking if i can do the wiring and actual work myself and just buy the parts i need - i hope to be able to spend maybe 500-600 US dollars(or around 3-5000 NOK). crazykn
I bought a Planet Audio 200.4 amplifier which is 50W (RMS) x 4 channels (4 ohms per channel). THD- 0.04% Freq response 20-20KHz -/+ 0.1db Input Sensitivity 5V Signal to noise ratio 102db Variable phase adjustment 11.4"x10.6"x2.3". I'm very satistfied at its performance driving my system (half aftermarket, half stock, no sub).Got the entire amp for $70 refurbished (which looked/worked excellent when I got it). Unfortuantly I can't find this amp anywhere anymore, but Planet Audio does make some good products. USAcoustics is part of the same company and they also produce very good amplifiers, but above all, they are cheaper than the Volvo Amp. Just be careful about 4 channel amps, they tend to big, so you better make sure you don't have someone in the back kicking it (place the amp so that the wiring is off to the sides of the seat, out of the way of being kicked).
