$640 Or Stock XC70 Subwoofer

Well, I have always wanted a subwoofer and I've always been too cheap to put a system in the T-5R, but now I think I'm going to go and blow $640 on a sub for my XC70 from Volvo.

It's a 12", 150 watt sub that goes over the spare in the back.

I'm psyched.

I was just wondering if anyone had one of these or had experienced them in any way before.

Honestly the stock system is pretty damned good, so I doubt the sub will be sub par (no pun intended).

yeah I remember people debating this earlier in the forum. No clue how long ago. I mean that price is basically for the custom enclosure and the clean install. But I'm a little skeptical about the performance of a 150 watt sub simply because alot of 300W subs dont actually perform that well. Just think of mid-line Kenwood or Rockford Fosgate subs. BUt it would be a clean install, so if you place looks over performance I'd go with it. I wonder if you could get a custom enclosure made and just thorw in like a JL 10w1 or even a 12w1v2 and have it all for cheaper than $640. I dont see it costing more.

Dude, remember me telling everyone about my moms stock sub? The install is perfection, you get to keep your spare tire and everything. As for performance, it doesn't throw too much bass at you. If you're mostly into it for a good bass filler so your speakers aren't working as hard...it works. Lemme see if I can find those pics again...

Yeah, I thought I remembered a thread, and I may even have started it now that I think about it, but uh... try searching for subwoofer in this forum. I'll have to do some more complex searches.

Thanks Mike.

I'm not sure about worrying about how hard my speakers are working, but I would like to reduce the slight rattle that exists in the doors because those speakers throw off quite a bit of bass, all things considered.

Also, have you tweaked the system in that car at all through the headunit? Tried the subwoofer settings and the other 7 channels to see if the bass output could be increased?

if you do get to keep the spare tire that would sell me. clean install and you dont really lose your spare tire well. I could probably care less about the power then.

There's also significant bass already from the speakers (and I don't mean like in the 850 and S70, this system is vastly superior to pre P2 vehicles' systems), so the power isn't as much an issue as improving the overall acoustics and speaker setup.

If it wasn't for the rediculous price I'd have jumped on this right when I bought the car.

Not really...it was for my mom's car so we didn't really give too much of a :monkey: about it as long as it worked...

thast a lot of money to pay for a sub, and if i remember correctly when i heard a new v70 about ayear ago, it didnt sound like much, similar to waht the 8" rear spearkres on a stock p1s70 would do...

for that much money, you can make an enclosure that sits inside the spare tire, wont take up any space, keeping the spare, and putout a lot more than the stock sub...just food for thought...

but again, it all comes dwon to what you want :)

That is a lot for a stock sub. I would go aftermarket. Youc an get better sound and quality.

But depending who installs it and how it's set up you can also get worse sound and quality, and a weaker/dirtier installation. The stock sub is also designed to work with the hi-wreck design of the P2 stereo systems.

I also don't want that BANG BANG BANG YOU CAN'T HEAR YOUR MUSIC NOW crap, either, which is what you get when you go cheap. I basically want the same sound I have now, except I don't want the speakers to be quite as noisy when the bass goes up or the doors to rattle as much, so it's sounding like this is right for me.

I'm still open to criticism from people who have experienced this piece though.

I just had the OEM subwoofer installed on my 05' XC70. It turned into a saga because Volvo had different kits for 2001-2004 models and 2005-2006 models which my dealer did not know about. I tried installing it myself, my car was not prewired, but the diagram in the manual made no sense so I took it to the dealer. The dealer couldn't figure it out either so they called VCNA and found out there is a new kit for 05's and the kit I had would not work.

To make a long story short, the sub kit cost about $550 (the new kit is cheaper by about $100), but the dealer stroked me for another $250 for the install. At first I was dissapointed with the bass, but then I adjusted the control on the subwoofer up a bit, and now it sounds great. I agree, it is not going to shatter windows or anything, but it has plenty of punch for me. I have the HU-850 system and even at ear bleeding volumes it sounds fantastic.
