SanAntone850R
My primary Volvo for the wife & 'lil one's failed @ highway speeds yesterday morning. Pretty scary for the wife who had never experienced a "loss of power" @ highway speeds. Once towed back to work/shop nearby, my colleagues & I found the timing belt cover was "cracked" w/ the belt off the gears. Of course, before opening the hood, we tried starting the vehicle one more time & heard the "rush/winding" sound which indicated where to look. At 55k miles, anyone ever seen or heard of this!?!? Pretty disappointed w/ this premature malfunction. Wife & I love our models we each have...just disappointed in a failure like this. Should find out the "bad news" this afternoon the on what to expect damage wise which I'm anticipating on being catastrophic. Until next time...'02 V70XC'96 850R
beachnut
Ouch ... sorry to hear! I'm guessing by the tone of your post that it's out of warranty?
starfish
Was the cover damaged first causing the belt to come off the gears?Did a pulley bearing fail causing the belt to run off the gears and break the cover?
SanAntone850R
Dealer determined the bearing around the tensioner "froze". Initially contacted corporate w/ the issue and was told on a follow-up call that a regional rep was to contact the dealer w/in (2) days. Since I finally initiated my extended warranty claim, I'm not surprised to have not heard back from the initial contact rep. Anyhow, due to the bearing failure, the belt came off the gears "cracking" the cover all the way around. The belt was not damaged...broke that is. But, once the head was removed, that's where the damage list started piling up. Than again, who's to say a quick replacement of the bearing, reassembly of the belt & cover, check of the compression & we'd be on our way. I've heard @ least 4 diffferent avenues to go. But, w/ the warranty giving the go ahead, I'm just looking @ putting it back together and getting rid of her, starting over. No more purchases from unknown sources....'02 XC70'96 850R
MrWinkey
The manual belt tensioner is known for failure issues. However I have never seen/heard of one failing that early? Sorry to hear about the mishap :(
