Ok, so I've decided that with the new car I need to protect my arse against these stupid cops around town. This is going to be a X-mas present so I need to pick out exactly which one I want. I searched for a little bit, but thought I'd ask here. What is the overall BEST radar detector out there? I've always heard Valentine 1 all the way, but when searching the Escort Passport 8500 X50 Seems to be its biggest opponent with a $100 less pricetag. There are also the Bel's out there, but those just don't seem up to par with the Escorts/Valentine. Any thoughts out there would really help. After I get this I would really like to hard wire it too, so if there are thoughts on that as well...

THANKS

-MIKE D

I have mine hardwired into my S80. Just connect the power lead directly to a switched fuse slot and run the ground wire anywhere. I have mine wired through a hidden switch (when I think I'm being targeted, I slow down and turn it off), then up through the A pillar headliner to the visor. I took out the vanity mirror and slipped my RD in that spot. Virtually invisible (I've had LEOs right there, and they never noticed). Works great, easy to install.

i would rank the v1, top of hte line passport, and the top of the line BEl as the top three choices, they each have scored victories against each other in different radar tests, and i have used all three (the v1 and passport for about a month each in customers and freinds cars, and the BEL in my own car)

i think when you balance all the aspects, cost, mounting, detection of different types of radars, display, etc etc etc, they come out relatively even.

i got the bel cause we can get it at dealer cost, if i had to pick one becuase i had to spend the money on retail cost, it would be pretty hard to decide.

I have owned a V1 for about 4 years. The things that I like about it most are the direction indicator and the count indicator. The one I have does not have the POP feature, but I do not thing that it is in common use where I live. I have had to send it back twice to have it fixed but all it cost is $45 each time. I think that the summer heat in Georgia gets to it. I usually run about 90 mph on the interstate and have not gotten a ticket yet. I was hit with a laser once that was not picked up when the police were on the cars in front of me due to the police were hitting you as you came through a curve. Luckly there was too much traffic for them to get out and pull us over at the time.

I can't say one's better than the other.

They both keep you from getting tickets.

I've never even had a close call since I got the Passport 8500 X50 B.

It's even picked up laser early enough to save me thanks to cops trying to get a reading before I'm in range.

The only advantage I could note for the Valentine is the arrows, and if you read the X50 manual it's easy to decode the signal yourself. VERY easy.

The rear sensor is actually pretty pointless. The front sensor picks up these signals anyway since radar bounces off of roadsigns, cars and other things.

Plus the X50's better looking.

Edit: I had the cordless for a while, too. They don't use pop in my area, but the X50 is actually slightly better detecting overall.

Also, the Solo isn't above the Escort. It's just the cordless version. ;)

i have the BEL rx65 by the way, and it does have pop...

it has saved me a few times giving me plenty of warning, but basically, if you are all by yourself on an empty road and doing more than say 20-30 mph ove hte limit, there is nothing thats going to save you from a cop who pops on you, cause you just cant reacte fast enough to slow down to a legal limit :)

V1 man, there aint nothin better. period.

here in VA where it is illigal, i had to be creative. mounted it in the headrest of the R, then wired it to the remote display. kills the laser but if your are laserd you are screwed anyway.

Detectors aren't illegal.

That would depend on what state you happen to be in. Some states do not allow people to have one at all. You simply can not have it, be it on and detecting or otherwise.

On a similar topic, I believe there is a detector detecting system is called V2 or something similar. Some detectors have detector detector detectability.
