That Volvo Ride...

This is not so much a race story as a testament to the ride of the Volvo…

We (me, wife and child) were on the way someplace last night in my chipped 2000 V70R AWD automatic and we were on a fairly new and not yet heavily traveled part of the “outer-loop” around our city. I saw a car in my rear view mirror that seemed to be coming up on my fst at times and slow at times. Turned out to be a WRX that was going fast and then slowing down near the overpasses, I guess to avoid the possibility of a HP setting in wait on the on-ramp, as they frequently do.

I was behind him as we entered a small group of cars and I thought to myself “He is going to accelerate once the car ahead moves over”. Sure enough, he did.

Since the road was clear ahead, I decided to try to keep up, and I did. I did not quite have it floored at first (and he might no have had it floored either), but when I momentarily lifted off teh throttle and the car shifted back into 5th, I went ahead and floored it to get it to kick-down. 100 mph came up real fast, and I backed off at that point.

The WRX noticed that a big burgundy wagon was staying with him and he slowed down to do a real race, but I was not interested so I declined. He blasted away at an impressive rate. I assume that he would have won.

As we were getting off the highway I said to my wife “You know we were going 100 mph back there?” She said “No way, when?” I told her and she said that she had no idea we were going that fast and that I should not go so fast again. She is used to me accelerating once I emerge from slower traffic into clean air, so she thought that I was just getting back up to speed – which would have been about 75 mph.

I guess this is a testament to the ride of the Volvo’s – that I could gun it from 60 to 100 and not have a passenger even notice that we were going way faster than we should.

Yea, but that's different :P

I got my car up to 120 without my passenger noticing once. We were in the desert, up near the Pearblossom Hwy on the 14, if anyone knows where that is...

Then again, I used to usually drive 80-100, so...

you would KNOW when I got on the gas if you fell asleep in my 242.

probably cause it pins you in the seat, and because... well I let it, it slides around enough that you'd be falling OUT of your seat ;)
